Part of my story was published in the local Las Veqas Sun and Boston's Patriot Ledger. It was aired on the local NBC News. My case changed the labeling of Lotrisone cream at Smith's Pharmacies across the United States and I have been interviewed on radio talk shows. The Steroid Warning Network was recognized and acknowleged for its public service by the State of Nevada legislature. Our steroid labeling resolution, AJR24 was passed and signed on May 27th, 1999. The Steroid Warning Network it is the only non-profit organization in the world that provides information and emotional support for those suffering from steroid related-medical problems. I discovered the need for SWN when after years of misdiagnoses led to pescriptions of steroids in one form or another without my ever being informed that shots, pills and creams over an eight year period all contained steroids. I was homebound for 4 years with steroid-induced cushing's. The most common kind of Cushing's is steroids.Because a topical steroid was the last steroid prescribed many of the side-effects were disfigureing to my face. Upon recovery (some of the steroid side-effects were not reversible) I was able to reach a settlement with Smith's and made a label change as part of that settlement which was reached without my having a lawyer. I had been helping people on my own but with that settlement I started the Steroid Warning Network and paid off the bankruptcy that my medical bills had caused. I believe in turning negative things into something positive. I also believe Faith and a good sense of humor helped me survive. There was a time when I had to hide behind planters in the doctors office so I didn't scare the children and to avoid the stares of adults who became fearful upon the sight of me. I had to remember that though the outside looked like a monster the inside was still the same.
I am not a doctor but simply a person who knows a bit of information on the subject of corticosteroids through research and personal experiences -- my own and others. This website is for informational and publc service purposes, not to discourage or encourage the use of specifc products. Always see a doctor to address all medical concerns.
Sincerely yours,
Leslie W. Cain Ortega
