| Dianabol | Sunday 4-Mar-2001 13:54:02 | I have been training on and off for two years i have noticed small changes in my measurements but the they are not great enough. I read an article over the net which was written by a doctor saying that a taking one twelve week cycle once a year would not do the body any harm. Could anyone offer me advice because i am thinking about trying a course.. Thanks.... Mark |

| Epidural Steroid Injections and side-effects | Sunday 4-Mar-2001 03:31:00 | I'm 23 years old and have suffered from extreme low back for just over a year. At first the doctors believed it was ankylosing spondolitis because I am HLA-B27 positive but later was told that it was inactive. My present doctor feels my pain is due to myofascial pain disorder. I have taken Vicodin ES Cyclobenzaprine and Vioxx every day for the past year and am still in constant pain. Next month I am scheduled to have epidural spinal injections and am concerned about the side-effects. Please advise. phildil21@aol.com |

| Cortizone injection "Shoulder" | Friday 2-Mar-2001 23:35:10 | Hi my name is Patricia. My nightmare started after I had a 3rd injection to my left shoulder. The first two injections went fine however the third injection I began having strange sensations in my body. Restlessness like I never felt. I developed panic attacks and leg twiching at night. I also had extreme weakness and fatigue. I even was admitted to the hospital for four days. I also suffered with veins collapsing and dehydration. After two weeks of this awful experience I finally began to get some better however I 'm still not quite myself.I truly hope my nightmare is coming to an end. I can truly say the only way I made it through this awful experience was JESUS. Jesus can deliver He gives hope in times like this. Psalms 31:24 Be strong and take heart all you who hope in the Lord. It could stay stored in your liver for example or it could pass through your kidneys in urine. I've heard of people passing medicines they took earlier in their lives when they have fasted.Fat tissues are store houses and so is the liver. This is why I wanted to know about cortizone. |

| Epidural Steroid Injections | Monday 12-Feb-2001 20:44:13 | I am an insulin-dependant diabetic - have been for 40 years. I have recently been having a series of three steroid injections for pain in my lower back. I know that steroids can raise the blood sugar in a diabetic so I tested often and took extra insulin to keep my blood sugar on track. The first two were OK but did nothing to help. since the third injection however I have been hurting more than ever and I am swollen up all over. My hands feet face and stomach are all huge and I have gained weight since the first injection. A diabetic needs to keep her weight down to help control the amount of blood sugar in her system. If I have a choice of what to do next I think I will choose surgery. It must be better than these injections. I won't take these any more. They just mess up my body. Jean |

| Weird effects from OTC hydrocortisone | Wednesday 7-Feb-2001 00:16:46 | A little background: I overused some OTC hydrocortisone ointment on my face 7 years ago and developed shriveling and uneven atrophy of the skin (because it had been peeling unevenly from an allergic reaction to cosmetics). Since then I'd used mometasone lotion on my scalp with no apparent lasting damage although it gave me temporary acne last time I'd used it.
Wellllll my scalp pain/ hair loss flared up and I couldn't get a prescription for something new so I bought some OTC 0.5% hydrocortisone cream and diluted it with water then applied it to my scalp. I didn't think I was overusing it - I used maybe 10g over 3 weeks and most of it ended up in my hair. At one point I spilled some on my face and washed it off then scrubbed too vigorously with a Buf-Puf for good measure - big mistake. I also continued my every-other-day facial scrubs which I d been doing for years to minimize the appearance of the original cortisone damage. Well by the end of the 3 weeks I noticed some new pitting and also my face had started to burn (mostly in the area where I d overscrubbed) so I stopped both the cortisone and the scrubbing. This was two months ago. The pitting has gotten worse and so has the burning. I ve also developed a few dilated blood vessels (telangiectasia). This is SO WEIRD. I guess I must have absorbed some of the cortisone systemically and the cortisone prevented my skin from healing normally from the scrubbing. My question is why is the damage still getting worse? Shouldn t it have at least stabilized by now? I feel like a medical freak and worry that my skin will continue to deteriorate. After I stopped the cortisone my scalp problem came back as bad as ever. I ve finally learned my lesson and will never use this stuff again. Laura ltiernay@hotmail.com |

| Persistant rash under eys-can't use cortizone cream anymore | Tuesday 6-Feb-2001 14:16:45 | A few years back I had a rash under my eyes. It was like little blisters that burn and itch. I was seeing two different dermatologists and neither knew what it was. I was put on several different cortizone cream both prescription and OTC until finally months later it went away. Actually it would go away over night but as soon as I stopped using the cream it would come right back until it eventually went away for good. But from the thinning of the skin side-effect it changed the appearance of that skin around my eyes. They are wrinkled and almost transparent-looking. Now the rash is back. Is there something without cortizone I could use? Thanks Alaina alaina alainainvt@aol.com |
| Re: Persistant rash under eys-can't use cortizone cream anymore | Friday 9-Feb-2001 21:53:06 | Hi Alaina
I ve never tried this myself but I ve heard topical emu oil is helpful for dermatitis. If you can t find that fish oil is supposed to be helpful as wel....although it certainly doesn t sound very appealing. If and when the rash ever gets under control you could try a glycolic acid cream like Neostrata to make the wrinkles less obvious.
Nutrition is also very important for any kind of inflammatory condition. I started taking flax oil about six weeks ago and have had a moderate improvement in my scalp problem. Flax oil (and certain fish oils) are rich in omega-3 fatty acids which act on the prostaglandin system to reduce inflammation. The gamma linolenic acid found in evening primrose oil also gets converted into anti-inflammatory prostaglandins. It s also helpful to cut down on trans fat and oils rich in omega-6s (ex. safflower sunflower cottonseed corn soy). This probably sounds like way too much trouble for a little rash but the overall health benefits are worth it.
Some suggested supplements are:
flax oil - 1-2 tablespoons evening primrose oil - 2-4 grams or borage or black currant oil - 1-2 grams B-50 complex multivitamin/multimineral (ex. Centrum 29) plus extra: vitamin A - 10 000 IU vitamin C - 1 gram vitamin E (natural) - 400 IU selenium - 100 mcg zinc - 20 mg MSM - 1 gram
Good luck! Laura ltiernay@hotmail.com |
| Re: Persistant rash under eys-can't use cortizone cream anymore | Tuesday 13-Feb-2001 05:03:25 | Hi Alaina I suggest you ask our SWN Medical Advisor Dr. Ron Hedger. A link to his website is in our reccommended sites. As we age the elasticity of the skin around our eyes is reduced . The steroid made it thin too. Remember anything that is put on the skin will be absorbed through the skin into our systems. I have a couple medical articles I'll be happy to mail you (reg. mail) The flare-up of the rash is quite common. Let me know if you'd like the articles.

| Steriod inhalers/nasal sprays and fever | Monday 5-Feb-2001 18:44:52 | Has anyone out there ever experienced a low-grade fever after using either cortizone nasal spray or a cortizone inhaler? I have had to use both products (not simultaneously) within the last month and each time I used them I developed a low-grade fever sore throat and loss of taste sensation.
I cannot find fever as a side effect in any of the drug literature and want to find out if others have experienced this problem.
Many thanks. Madelyn |

Yes I've heard of those side-effects. Those are not uncommon. I don't know why they are not listed perhaps they consider them minor side-effects and they list some major ones. But you need to tell your doctor.

| Prednisone does it kill? | Saturday 3-Feb-2001 21:54:16 | My mother has been on prednisone for about 10 years straight. She got off of the drug for about a year and is now on it again and has been now for almost a year and a half. This has done so much damage to her she is not the same as she was 4 years ago. She has every side effect known and I am trying to find out answers. She gets down to about 20mg and she freaks out puts herself in the hospital so she then gets 60. I think she is totally dependent on this drug. She is 67 but has a body of a 87 year old. Is there anything that can be done? Is this going to kill her and if so is this a slow process. She has begun to loose her memory is this all part of this awful drug? Or does anyone out there know if it is too late for her. | Re: Prednisone does it kill? | Sunday 4-Feb-2001 01:10:56 | Hi Jill
I'm sorry to hear about your mother's condition. it does sound like she is dedent on the steroid. What is she prescribed it for? Anything can kill when taken long enough and at high doses. Yes there are things \that can be done. Alternate day therapy or reducing (slowly) the dosage going to a weaker steroid. It all depends on what condition she was prescribed it for. Also in all that time has she ever had an "ACTH" (blood test?) she sure should have had them. When was her last bone density test? Eye exam ? Does she have the oon face (Round) and a weight gain in the belly? Knowing the answers to these questions would help me to advise you better. Also I suggest emailing Dr. Ron Hedger a link to his site is in our SWN Links section of our web site. What form is the prednisone in Pills. cream. inhaler etc? I'll help in any way I can. You can email me directly with the answers to my questions. Keep the faith.

| Re: steriod shot | Tuesday 23-Jan-2001 04:16:06 | Hi Ruthie
I'm sorry to hear about your daughter's problem. It sure sounds like a reaction to the steroid shots. Panic attacks don't usually last as long as you describe. But there is a chance that the steroid-induced a panic attack. Steroids can cause hallucinations mood swings depression. I'm going to email you a few medical article abstracts about this subject. Please let me know that you received them. SWN is here to help and I'm only an email away.

| Anxiety and Steroids | Monday 22-Jan-2001 05:18:27 | I am a 22 year who is very serious about body building and considering steroids. There is just one factor which has held me back from making a firm decision that is that I have a anxiety disorder. My doctor says it is called OCD(obsessive compulsive disorder). I know there is some mild steroid out there but WHAT IS IT? I know I have some serious factors to weigh out here. I heard there is a steroid called DECA which might be safe for me to cycle but I need to find out from a professional what DECA will do to me. This is very important to me. If some professional advice is out there let me know. James BLEUT22 |
| Re: Anxiety and Steroids | Tuesday 23-Jan-2001 04:08:44 | Hi James James anabolc steroids can cause Roid rage mood swings depression and that's in people with no disorders. You have OCD I can tell you whatever anabolic steroid you use it will most probably make your OCD worse. Also remember any muscle gained by anabolic steroids is only temporary and dependent upon the use of the steroid. Better to do it the old fashioned way at least the gains you make you can keep and it won't through your body and emotions in havoc. You're smart enough to look before you leap. I'm telling you the jump is not worth the danger so be smart enough to do your bodybuilding the way you can be proud of.

| Moon Face | Thursday 11-Jan-2001 16:30:05 | My allergy doctor prescribed Prednisone for me after I woke up one morning with an allergic reaction to a cream I was using for my dark circles. It looked like someone has punched me in both eyes they were so swollen. I have now been taking Prednisone (10mg) on and off for the past 3 weeks to heal what I thought was still the swelling from the reaction. But after reading the side effects to Prednisone I now know that this is what is referred to as "moon face". Yesterday was my last day taking the medicine thank god. My face keeps swelling up and down and over the past couple weeks I have driven myself and everyone crazy trying to figure out if and when this condition will go away. Can you please let me know if and/or how long it takes for this to heal/go away. Just to give you some insight my dose for the first week was 4 pills for 4 days then 2 for the next 3 days the second dose was 3 pills for 2 days 2 pills for 2 days and 1 pill for 5 days and the last dose was 2 pills for 5 days. Please help as this is making me crazy! Thank you. Steph sas430@yahoo.com |
| Re: Moon Face | Saturday 13-Jan-2001 22:17:10 | Hi Steph It sounds like moon face to me. How long it takes to get better depends on if the moon face is part of Steroid-induced Cushings or part the steroid withdrawal symptoms. From what you describe you may have the moon face (a cushinoid appearence). Since you don't describe a long history of prescription steroid therapy (only the days you mentioned) I suggest asking your doctor to order a blood test (ACTH) and/or a 24 hr cortisol urin test. That should tell you if you have steroid-in duce Cushing's. I don't think you do. The time it takes varies from person to person. The kind of steroid and the potency are other factors. it may take just a few weeks. If you have steroid-induced Cushing's it may take longer. Please understand I'm not a doctor and even a doctor couldn't tell you exactly how long. Since you are through with the Prednisone the steroid should be leaving your system ow. Drink plenty of water it helps with muscle cramping. I hope this helps. If you need further assistance SWN is only an email away.

| "LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT" for Prednizone BUT will this have a fairy tale ending? | Friday 5-Jan-2001 00:33:04 | Hi Leslie! So happy to found this website. I thought I have found the best thing that could happen to my allergies - Prednizone. Friends have been telling me the many side effects from long-term use such as developing cancer as the worst and maybe "moon fish" (to say the least). When I was first prescribed with Prednizone in December 1999 (around Christmas time) I felt so good and relieved from my sore throat stuffy nose and all other cold/flu symptoms. I survived Christmas and all its stress. I'm a full-time working mom of 3 - 20 9 & 7 and how I can keep sane amidst my stressful job still amazes me but thought Prednizone was my "savior". Thinking Prednizone was my "magic pill" I did not finish the whole 21 tablets @ 20 mg./3 times a day and KEPT SOME (maybe 4 or 5) as a "lifesaver" in times of need. The first time I took it I regained so much energy and never seem to get tired even with only 4-5 hour sleep and since I love singing was so surprised to even reach a high note. So I hope you know what I mean that it was truly for me a "love at first sight".
But come February and March 2000 I started having cold/flu symptoms again and this time developed bad unproductive cough that not only chokes me but also hurt my chest that breathing was so difficult and when I saw the doctor he told me I shouldn't have stopped the dosage of Prednizone in December and then prescribed Prednizone again (the ones in a packet) Zithromax and AMI-TEX PSE (generic for Duratuss) and suspected I have broncho pneumonia but X-ray results showed negative.
That was the last time I had Prednizone but since I grew up with this cold/flu symptoms clogged nose and all other "allergy stuff" I have been used to it. Recently in November of 2000 I started having sore throat and getting sick again (after having been with a "just about to get the cold" friend). My doctor gave me Prednizone and Sulfamethoxazole (generic for Septra) Flonase nasal spray and Echinacea tablets. After 5 days was given the flu shot so I could possibly cope should I get one this season. NOW THIS IS WHAT I AM CONCERNED WITH. How come that just as soon as I finished the 7-day/60 mg. a day prescription I have been waking up with a throbbing headache muscle pain and just extremely tired and exhausted all the time and since been taking pain-killer before I sleep so I can wake up headache free and do my job effectively.
Just yesterday went to see my doctor again and told these concerns and I need to know why Prednizone is the only medicine that can do wonders for me. He does not advise me to have it on a long-term basis but again gave me Prednizone for 7 days (same dosage) and Septra for 3 weeks. This time he is quite sure I have a chronic sinusitis or rhinitis. Told me to increase my Vitamin C. He seems to be a doctor who believes in still taking the vitamins.
I may have taken so much of your time reading this but I hope you understand that if I could avoid medicine and being dependent on it I will. I am now 43 years old and have survived this life of always getting sick when someone sneezes beside me or when I get exposed to any "unpleasant odors" I think I could survive more and longer rather than dealing with any side effect any drug can do to a person. Reading ahd hearing about the so many diseases resulting from drug overdose really pains me especially if you have been treated by an inept and uncaring doctor.
Thank you so much for your time. I don't know what this 7-day Prednizone and 3-week Septra and Flonase nasal spray will do to me now but one thing for sure I'll be ready for the dreaded muscle-pain and overfatigue symptoms. I am now embarking on a much-needed exercise program (gradually) and watching my diet coupled with vitamins and one most important thing: taking it easy at work and most of all at home. DO YOU THINK WITH THIS IN MIND I CAN MINIMIZE ANY SIDE EFFECTS AGAIN? I HOPE TO BE WEANED OUT OF PREDNIZONE AND COPE WITH LIFE (ARE THERE ANY INFO OR LINKS YOU CAN RECOMMEND?) Your website is an eye-opener. I did go through each letter (never had the patience in any website before) and I have my heart all out for everyone who has their lives and medical experiences to share whether good or bad. God Bless!

| Re: "LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT" for Prednizone BUT will this have a fairy tale ending? | Tuesday 9-Jan-2001 05:23:03 | Hi BeBe
Your "Love at first sight" sounds like it turned to "Fright Night." I think part of the reason wa the abrupt stoppage of the steroid. But the symptoms you described are classic "steroid-withdrawal" symptoms. Yes you can do tings to reduce their severity but No one knows how to stop steroid withdrawl syndrome. Things that can make it less severe are weaning down slowly exercise (And good for you I'm proud of the determination you show in you MB post) and drink plenty of water. The muscle cramping should be reduced some if you drink plenty of water. Your doctor sounds good and his advice about Prednisone long term was right on. What happens is the more you use the more you need to use to get the same relief. Flonase has pros and cons too. As for links check out our SWN link section you'll find articles on steroid withdrawl.

| Diabetes + Steroids | Wednesday 3-Jan-2001 20:54:36 | On Nov. 26th my father(who had type II diabetes) was hospitalized for pneumonia. The addmitting doctor prescibed columedrol(My family was alarmed that he had prescrided a steroid- we were told not to worry that they that it was a low dose and leaves the system quickly). Within 2 days my father started bloating up which the doctor said was caused by the steriods so he prescided lasix to relieve the bloating. On the 5th day he developed an arthymia again the Dr. said another side affect he was given a beta blocker and cummindan. On the 7th day he started passing blood. the doctor ordered upper and lower GIs he was still bleeding then the doctor ordered a scope which was the first of 5. The first scope revealed ulcers in his stomach and polps in his colon. On the 11th day they operated on my father to remove part of his colon but when they had him open they could see that he was bleeding from another location. The 2hr operation turned into 4.5hrs. When the surgeon came out to talk to us about the procedure and the complication of it he blamed it all on the massive doses of steriods that my father took had caused my fathers tissue in his stomach & intestine to become fryable he compared it to trying to stich jello together. The gastrointestinoligst who had to be called in also said that my father had developed new ulcers which also can be a side affect from the steriods. My father never came back from the surgery He spent the next 7 days strapped down in spastic convulsion (doctors said it was ICU hysteria). I will not go in to the remaining 7 days of my Father life. My father died on Dec 18 3.45pm. After the first surgery all the specialist kept refering to the massive dose of steriods my father took was the cause of all the complications MY FATHER WAS ON STEROIDS FOR 6 DAYS..... I sent this email for several reasons. 1. To see if any one else has had a the same or similar circumstances with steriods + diabetes 2. To warn people with diabetes to be very cautious of health professionals. 3. To see if I can get any further information regarding diabetes + steriods Angela |
| Re: Diabetes + Steroids | Thursday 4-Jan-2001 16:04:33 | Hi Angela
I'm so sorry for the needless loss of your father. Thank you for sharing your painful story. I wish I could say I'd never heard of it. But fact is one of SWN founding members and a treasured friend Russell Skewes died as a result of complicatiions from a sterod inhaler he was prescribed. First he ot diabetes then he got pnemonia. His Diabetes reversed whenf he withdrew slowly and went to a lower dose. But by then he was using steroid creams for his skin infections. Russ was the Father of 2 a grandfather and a beloved husband of more than fifty years. His wife lives here and she's been devasted as have we all. i lost my mother and father to different forms of cancer. I understand the hopeless feeling and the anger of the needless pain and suffering. The only way I know of getting through that knd of pain is to turn those feeligs into determination to make a difference so that other peoples loved ones may be spared your father's agony and yours. Turn that anger towards getting accountablity for the doctors mistakes. Nothing can bring your father back but you can help others from going through that same loss. Keep an eye on our message board answer posts that you can with any info you learn. Get those doctors that blamed the steroids to put it in writing. What they say is one thing getting them to put it in witing is another. You see as it is there is very little accountabity and that may tend to make some doctors less caring about the consequences of their actions. Lawyers tend to want cases where spomges are left i or the wrong leg was cut off they want something easy. But you lost your father and you may find a lawyer that will take the case. If doctors see there is accountablity if lawyers see there is money to be ade in steroid malpractice cases these incidents would be reduced drastically. What was the dosage of the steroid? As soon as your father showed side-effects the steroid should have been reconsidered. Had your father ever been given a steroid sensitivity patch test? I think you are so brave to share such a painful part of your lfe to inform others. I do have some information about steroids and diabetes and will beemaiing you them. (give me a day or 2). Angela how old was your father? There was a gentleman in England that posted he lost his mother bause of steroids you might want to respond to his post. My grandparnts and parents have all passed (when I was 40). I miss them but I know they are with me. They are in every lesson I teach my son and grandchildren. They are in every holiday or family celebration. Our loved ones live forever in the love they shared. memories we made every life and heart they touched. So we may miss the sparkle in their eyes and their hugs but I do believe wewill be together someday and until then they are putting in a good word for us in Heaven and watching over us here on earth. At least they are ut of pain. I prefer to remember my mom's laugh not the excruciating pain she'd be in. It's natural to grieve and be angry. What you do about it can make all the difference to your heart and your future. I'll help in any way I can.

| Re: Diabetes + Steroids | Saturday 6-Jan-2001 22:23:55 | Angela: I am so sorry to hear about the death of your father. I recently lost my father and I know the kind of emotions that you must be feeling right now. I developed severe diabetes as a result of steroid use; I also have glaucoma and steroid myopathy as well. So I do know that there is a connection between steroids and diabetes..I was told that the diabetes would subside as I began tapering down my steroids...but I am down to a relatively low dose (5 mg) and the diabetes is still with me and I am still insulin dependent. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Karen Darwish karendarwish@msn.com |
| Betamethasone side effects | Tuesday 26-Dec-2000 22:09:19 | Leslie:
In May of 1999 my water broke at 6 months gestation I was given betamethasone twice for my son's lungs. I have been having soooo many problems since taking this steroid. I am seriously overweight I have a moon face and round tummy my sight is not the same. I won't go in to the lower back pain and hip problems. I have infrequent periods I have not conceived since November of 1998 with my son. My son passed away in November of '99 due to lung complications. I have so many phycical ailments I do not know what to do I am praying for a miracle now. I really need to lose this weight and rectify some other issues. I also have a friend that I met in the hospital with my son she also had the shots along with magnesium (me too) she is having a number of difficulties as well. Both of us have memory issues.
Please advise.

| Re: Betamethasone side effects | Thursday 28-Dec-2000 03:35:00 | Hi Mrs. Gee
I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. I have drwarded your post to our Medical Advisor Dr. Hedger. Pkease allow him some time to answer. meanwhile I'm going to see what I can find. I'm ot surprised by the reactions betamethasone can have some of the side-effects you mentioned. have you been tested for steroid-induced cushing's? Have you had an ACTH (blood test) or a 24 hour urinary test to check our Cortisol levels? Because the moon face souunds like a cushinoid feature. Steroid-induced Cushing's is reversible in most cases. Have you had any other shots or mediation (even over the counter steroid cream) that may have contained a steroid? Sometimes people may take a medication and not be aware t's a steroid so I'm trying to learn what the date (month and year) was the last steroid treatment? If you know the milligrams it may help Dr. Hedger to know. You can also contact him through his web site it it hyperlinked in our SWN "Links" section.I'll do my best to help you and your friend. SWN provides information and emotional support and we are here to help.

| Stanazolic (Steroid Use?) | Sunday 24-Dec-2000 16:20:19 | Hi I was wondering if someone could please tell me what they know about Stanazolic a steroid for dogs/horses. I have a friend who is currently taking it and I'm afraid of the side-effects. No he isn't a dog or a horse; he was recommended to do it by professional body builder-X. Please let me know ASAP. I want to get him to quit before anything seriously bad happens (but I need facts to get him to quit which I can't find any about Stanazolic). Thank you so much for your time Rick R. Rick Rippey magicpro@goplay.com |
| Re: Stanazolic (Steroid Use?) | Monday 25-Dec-2000 05:42:34 | Hi Rick
I wonder if your friend knows how lucky he is to have a true friend like you seem to be. Go to our SWN "Links" you'll find all the information you need in the "Anabolic" section of our "Links". Any gains your friend may make are temporary and not even close to being worth all the potential side-effects. Show your friend the info that should be enough to convince a reasonable person. But sad to say anabolic steroids are not known for creating reasonable minds. Roid rage depression mood swings but not reasonable minds. So if he won't listen don't be surprised and don't give up. You are fighting for his health even if he can't see it right now. If your successful he'll be around to someday thank you. That's a gift of friendship you're giving. That is a wonderful gift.

| Flovent and facial hair | Wednesday 20-Dec-2000 10:23:40 | My daughter is sixteen and has been on flovent(50mcg 2x a day) since August of 1999. In September of 1999 we noticed that she was developing facial hair. Has anyone else had or heard of this side effect of flovent? |
| Re: Flovent and facial hair | Friday 22-Dec-2000 05:21:42 | Yes facial haair (usually peach fuzz type hair) can occur. Jas your daughter had a ACTH (blood) test or a 24 hr cortisol (urine) test? Since she is showing steroid side effects (the facial hair) there may be other side efects like change in monthly cycle mood swings acne so keep a close eye out for other steroid side-effects. The facial hair usually goes away after withdrawal steroid therapy. Hope this helps. Best wishes Leslie W. Ortega Founder & CEO Steroid Warning Network Leslie swnet@webtv.net |
| erythema multiforme | Tuesday 12-Dec-2000 18:56:13 | i am a 32 year old woman. i have had erythema multiforme for 10 years now I am currantly under three hospitals and still can not find a cause or cure for this. i am now desperate for any help or information on this. it involves reacurant mouth ulcers (lesions). In the very first stages i had a very itchy rash all over me mainly on my feet hands legs. The rash looked like cigarete burns sort of like big blisters. It felt like it to. The ulcers in my mouth start with 2 to three then as the day goes on they double or multiply ihave had more than fourty ulcers in my mouth at one time. The only medication that calms it is steriods but is not a cure. I seem to just finish a course of steriods and with in a week or two it is back. I am getting very desperate now as these are causing problems in my bones. CAN ANYONE HELP!!! connaghan@cableinet.co.uk |
| Re: erythema multiforme | Saturday 16-Dec-2000 04:32:34 | Hi I'm sorry to hear about the problems your having. Sounds ike the steroids may be calming the blisters but I think you may be having steroid-induced flare-ups. Do you slowly withdraw from the steroid or stop abruptly? Never stop prolonged steroid therapy abruptly. I'm going to give you the email address of our SWN Medical Advisor Dr. Ron Hedger (it may take a week for him to get back to you) rksclp@aol.com Meanwhile I'll see if I can find any info that might help.

| trigger thumb | Monday 11-Dec-2000 16:33:06 | After 6 weeks in a splint to try to heal my left thumb tendon after a fall I was injected with a cortisone in the base of the left thumb. Within 3 minutes or so I had a terrible reaction that included passing out throwing up and seizure. What could have caused that? The Doctor suggested that I could be allergic to the small amount of medicine in the injection that numbed the thumb. It was horrible and I need to know how to avoid this in the future. Needles to say a 15 minute appoint turned in to several hours inthe doctors office and an emergency call to my husband. Help. I've called to find out the exact name of the medication but they haven't returned my call. Anyone have a simular reaction? Leigh iramos@erols.com |
| Re: trigger thumb | Saturday 16-Dec-2000 04:47:07 | Hi Leigh I have heard of that happening before. Two cases where the person ended up being steroid sensitive and another where somehow the inection seemed to hit a nerve. Check our SWN "Links" section. There is a medical article about trigger finger. Steroids are often the treatment for trigger finger. But after what you went through it may not be the best treatment for you. You might want to ask the doctor to do a steroid patch test before considering steroid therapy again. I hope you're feeling better now.

| Rhinocort nasal spray | Friday 8-Dec-2000 08:35:59 | If anyone has taken Rhinocort nasal spray for any period of time and experienced septum perforation please contact me.
I feel that the packaging is not marked appropriately for this "side effect" and that doctors need to warn their patients of this and adequately inform them how to use the spray properly.
I have a feeling that this so-called "rare" side effect is not as rare as the manufacturer or your doctor would have you believe.
Thanks. Kristin k1j2g3@cablespeed.com |

| hydrocordisone+nasonex=panic? | Thursday 7-Dec-2000 02:22:56 | Having cronic sinus problems and wishing to do as my doctor had prescribed I began taking nasonex nasal spray not knowing until now that it was a steroid. I was inconsistent at my dosing and as usual just stopped taking it abrubtly after about a week. Concurrently I had a horrible case of poison ivy and was using OTC hyrdrocordisone cream like crazy. There are no specific dosing instructions on the package and since I had it over 2/3 of my body I was using it quite liberally. After using it about 6 days with this too I suddenly stopped. I probably stopped the nasal spray somewhere during the poison ivy. I have been feeling wacko since stopping the hydro. cream though I am only now attempting to put the two together. I have had panic attack symptoms--racing heart dizziness fatigue dry mouth nausea . . . Is this what can happen with OTC creams or such a short yet sudden use of steroidal nasal spray? If so what should I be doing? This is not my first experience with panic attacks but I am now wondering if there has been a correlation with my on again off again nasal spray use and the onset of the previous attacks. My doctor wants to treat the panic attacks with anti-depressants and have me analyzed by a psychiatrist. I sure don't want to endure that if there is a chance that this is related to my irresponsible and niave use of steroids. jen |
| Re: hydrocordisone+nasonex=panic? | Friday 8-Dec-2000 07:21:06 | Hi Jen
I think you should explore both. I know that guidence helps when steroids have messd with your emotions. but I also beliee there could be a correlation so I suggest keeping a journal to keep track of your episodes and the use of steroid spray. Yes one can us too much of the over counter cream to cause medical problems especially if you were using the other form of steroid too. I have info on what steroid therapy can do metally: memory loss confusion mood swings deppression. mania. The mental changes resemble bi polar disorder. Steroid sensativity is something that could trigger episodes after steroi therapy. Find a counsler who is sympathetic and believes in what the steroids can do. That way you will have more emotional support. If you need us SWN is only an email away.

| Re: addendum | Friday 8-Dec-2000 07:09:44 | Hi Steroids can ause many mental changes. Inability to focus depression mood swings memory loss.Stress alone can cause memory loss so you add to that the steroids and it is no wonder things get a little fuzzy sometimes. but things should be getting clearer soon.
