The purpose of the Silent Heroes of the Cold War nonprofit corporation is to promote and encourage patriotism by preserving cold war history. Americans must never forget that even in a secret and covert war, such as the cold war, thousands of American’s lost their lives. The Cold War was the most dangerous conflict our world ever faced. We must also never forget that fear and paranoia nearly brought two powerful nations to the brink of destruction. The day we forget the lessons of the cold war may be the day we no longer exist as a nation.

CIVIL DEFENSE GEIGER COUNTER |
Pictured is a civil defense geiger counter manufactured by Victoreen Instrument Company Cleveland, Ohio. These survey meters were stored in bomb shelters and civil defense supply stashes around the country. Geiger counters would be used in a post nuclear world to monitor fallout radiation.
FAMILY RADIATION MEASUREMENT KIT |
Manufactured by Bendix Corporation of Cincinnati Division. This Family Radiation Measurement Kit contains: (1) Dosimeter / Ratemeter Charger, (2) Dosimeters, (1) Size D Eveready Battery. Dosimeters are used to measure fallout after an atomic attack. |

CIVIL DEFENSE RECEIVER / TRANSMITTER |
GONSET COMMUNICATOR II |
This transmitter / receiver was used to link one of many Los Angeles County civil defense fallout shelter command centers to other fallout shelters. And special thanks to Emily, a kind visitor to our website, we now know that this Gonset AM radio operated in the 6 meter band (50-54 Megacycles). The range was approximately 20 miles depending on terrain and antenna height. Manufactured by Gonset Corporation circa 1950

RUSSIAN ICBM LAUNCH KEYS |
As the cold war drew to a close the former Soviet Union was disbanded. With the brake up of the Soviet Union the Russian nuclear program had to be dismantled. Pictured are two Russian launch keys now obsolete since the ballistic missiles they controlled have been destroyed. Similar to the launch sequence used in the United States, the Russian nuclear procedure also required two keys turned simultaneously by two separate individuals to affect a successful launch. |
