NRHS Chapter Educational Tour - May 19-20, 2001 (Page 1)
The Train History Educational 2-Day Tour made stops at several locations in California: Barstow, CA (BNSF Yard) - Yermo, Ca (UP Yard) - Barstow Train Museum - Cajon Summit, CA
And Perris, CA (Orange Empire Railway Museum).

Story by: Ray Wagner

Our May 19 & 20th weekend bus trip to the Perris Rail Museum with several other stops in between was a huge success! We departed Opportunity Village at 7AM sharp as scheduled. Our three stewardesses ( Dorothy, Cathy, and Beverly), announced their services and were ready to serve everyone drinks and yummy food - such a treat!
The stops at Cima and Kelso were removed from the schedule to allow us plenty of time at the Burlington & Northern Santa Fe Barstow yard. A brief stop at Baker and we were on our way. We arrived at the BNSF yard at 10AM. We were split into 2 groups to accommodate their classroom where we received instructions on "Operation Life Saver" prior to our tour of the grounds & LMIT building & fueling station. Our tour guides were the best - these women knew their stuff and were gracious, patient fun ladies!
After leaving Barstow we back tracked to Yermo for lunch at UP Beanery and a tour of their yard. Then it was on to Victorville & the Green Tree Inn for the night. A superb Mexican buffet was followed by Chard Walker"s beautiful slide presentation. Chard is a retired railroad telegrapher and author and his talk was a wonderful history lesson based on railroads.
Leaving Victorville Sunday morning we traveled the back way to Cajon pass and were treated to a great photo opportunity with many trains going both directions up and down the pass. After leaving Cajon pass we went down I-15 to Perris Railroad museum and arrived their about 10:45 AM. About 3 hours were spent at this museum going through numerous displays and riding the streetcars and trains.
A brief stop for food and we were on our way to Peggy Sues Diner in Victorville for dinner and back home.
A SPECIAL THANKS !! to Mike Hunt for driving the bus to the many sites and backroads and getting us all home safely.
THANKS! also to Bruce Rogers who organized the entire trip - GREAT JOB BRUCE! And last but certainly not least THANKS TONY BOND!!! Who was everywhere ensuring the success of this trip - what a GREAT LEADER!!
