The panel discussion was great. It gave us consumer’s new insight about what it is like to be in show business But it seems the guest panelists also learned from each other. They found out they shared many of the same experiences. In fact Kelly Clinton said while speaking, “ We have all made a connection here today”.

After the lunch and panel discussion everyone mingled. . We were able to talk, take pictures and connected. . It was just nice being a part of ECE this day. Something special happened all of us at the event. Article by M. Calderea:

Sweet Louie:
Entertainment Consumers’ Exchange, Inc. held another wonderful awards luncheon April 22, 2006 that was attended by approximately 50 members, recipients, and guests. We all had a delicious lunch served by the staff of Sazio’s Restaurant in family style that contributed to the congenial atmosphere of the event. The lunch was followed by the awards presentations. Hosting the awards was Sweet Louie, who did a great job with his wit and charm. The first award was the Horizon Award for new or emerging entertainers. This year the award went to Carmine Mandia. Mark Giovi who was recipient of that same award in fall, 2004, presented it to him. Marlene Koppenhaver bestowed ECE’s new Pioneer award to Mary Kaye and Norman Kaye for their enormous contribution in the entertainment scene in Las Vegas. They are definitely true pioneers, as their Mary Kaye Trio was the first Lounge Act and started the 24 hour entertainment that made Las Vegas the entertainment capital of the world. All of today’s Vegas entertainers owe their success due to Mary & Norman Kaye.

Barbara Carucci and I had the privilege of presenting Corrie Sachs The Las Vegas Favorite Female Singer Award. She has been a favorite of ours for years. We have enjoyed her in Honky Tonk Angels and on The Dennis Bono Show. We also presented the Las Vegas Favorite Musician of the Year Award to Bob Sachs, Corrie’s husband, who has been a favorite of many and is well known and respected throughout the entertainment industry. Corrie accepted her award and then accepted Bob’s award by reading a letter from his with his heart felt thanks and appreciation for the recognition. Bob could not receive it in person because he was playing at Caesars’ Palace. Mark Giovi received the Las Vegas Favorite Male Singer Award. Laura Velgos presented it. He is a fairly newcomer who has only been on the Vegas scene since spring 2004. However, he has made quite an impact

our honorees at the
Membership event.
The first was a membership pizza party where we honored Kathleen Dunbar as Vegas Female Comedian of the Year, Bruce “Big John” Mickelson as our Vegas Male Comedian of the Year and The Shades of Sinatra as our Tribute Show of the Year. Ryan Baker and Carmine Mandia two of the three members of “Shades” attended the event. Larry Luso the third “Shade” had a prior commitment in New York City and couldn’t attend, but did send a message of appreciation for the honor. A lively and often hilarious discussion about “Entertaining in Vegas” was heard by the capacity crowd attendees

Bruce Mickelson and
Kathleen Dunbar
Quotes from the Membership Party:
What brought you to Vegas?

Kathleen Dunbar: ”I got on a plane, American West 1943”.

Bruce Mickelson “I came by stagecoach!

Kathleen Dunbar: “He’s Old!”

Background:

Ryan Baker: I heard Bruce mention IBM and that is what I use to do, work in the whole corporate cubical deal on the east coast. So now not only have I worked for buyers and cheap scumbags that will screw you out any chance they get; I now work in Show Business.”

Kathleen Dunbar: “That’s Funny, Ryan!

”Ryan Baker: I know. I haven’t been listening to what the three of them have been saying because I’ve been working on that!”

Kathleen Dunbar:
Working Vegs:

Kathleen Dunbar: I love this city! I auditioned for Cirque du Soleil. Evidently my leg behind my head, nobody wanted to see.“

Carmine Mandia: I am trying to picture all that!

EDITORIALS
WE ARE FAMILY by Zillah (Zee) Matulonis

Frankie Dee & Daughter Renee

Image of Rhondo Fleming and
Husband Darol W Carslon,
They have been married for about 2 years.
At Entertainment Consumers Exchange, Inc.’s spring 2005 event one of those we honored was Frankie Dee, He is almost 91 years old, dapper and still a brilliant man who has been connected with show business most of his life and had the longest running radio show in Vegas among his many accomplishments. When accepting the award he said “Entertainers are my second family”.

I said to myself how true that is for all of us who love entertainment and entertainers. Whether it is fans of “American Idol” that watch the show week after week that they become involved emotionally with the winners and losers. They become a second family to those loyal viewers.

Then there are people that become a family of fans of a particular performer or entertainment. Fans often connect with the same people at a concert on the internet or in line at a weekly show. Often they share common concerns about the performers, entertainment or each other, just like a family. The performers or casts of an entertainment are part of the family as its common thread.

Fans have to remember that entertainers are part of the human family of people. Like all people they have both good and bad days. Now and then they have problems, don’t feel up to par and might have to save their energy for the performance. Give them their space.

Entertainers need to remember how important fans are to them. Most fans just want to be recognized and be treated like friends of the family. There are the extreme, obsessive fans. But there have been entertainers that have also take advantage of fans. Entertainers connect, acknowledge and give your fans the attention they deserve for supporting your work.

Recently I had the great pleasure of meeting screen legend Rhonda Fleming, during Cinevegas I had the opportunity of two short interviews. Instead of the usual interview questions I sensed she wanted to express what she was feeling. So for the first interview, I asked what do you think of Las Vegas since your last visit? She said” I haven’t been here since 1959. I almost fainted; it was just a sleepy country town when I played the brand new Tropicana. Here we are to receive this wonderful Centennial Award. It is such an honor since I played here 50 years ago. To see it now, I am awestruck.”

The next morning, Johnny Brendan, Fleming’s grandson, presented her with a Star on The Walk of Fame”, at Brendan’s Theater which he owns inside the Palms Casino Resort. I once again approached her and asked what she was felling about all of this. She took my hand, treated me like an extended friend of the family and said, “I am awestruck. Last night with the Centennial Award it was such a wonderful thing I was thrilled. Then Johnny my Grandson, surprised me with is wonderful first star on his walk of fame. I am so grateful. What a wonderful time. I haven’t been to Vegas since 1959. Here we are and with a beautiful memory and you all have been so wonderful. Thank you.” Rhonda Fleming and I treated each other with respect as people and friends that are part of the family that loves entertainment

That is what Entertainment Consumers Exchange, Inc is all about. We are about bringing together fans and entertainers. It is about respecting and acknowledging that together, we are like second family.

WHAT YOU CAN LEARN ON MYSPACE

The Late Great Mary Kaye (Mary Kaye Trio)at Bootleggers Bistro
O. K. I’ll admit it; I’ve become an entertainment geek. I love learning interesting facts, tidbit useful or not so useful information about entertainment. Myspace has become my paradise for exploring and pickup these tidbits of information.

One of the things I have learned is that my favorite genre of music now has a name, Rock Roots Music. My definition of rock roots is rock and pop music made by pioneers from the 1950 through mid-1960. I would include Paul Anka, Chuck Berry, Fat Domino, Everly Brothers, Bill Haley, Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Holly, and Frankie Lymon among so many others who are considered the pioneers of rock music. However I would also include rock music ancestries such as the Treniers, Big Mama Thornton, Mary Kaye Trio, Freddie Bell, King Curtis and even Louie Prima.

There are many new singers and musicians helping to preserve rock roots music. But I would like to see more radio stations playing the music. Yes there are still some Golden Oldies stations but they are disappearing and those left are playing music from the 60’s & 70’s.. One thing you all might do to help is go to www.musicchoice.com and suggest they put a channel dedicated to rock roots. Plus I would like to see songwriters such as Felice and Boudleaux Bryant (Everly Brothers, Carl Perkins, Frankie Lane, Ray Charles, Herb Albert, and the bluegrass & State of Tennessee song “Rocky top” etc) be included in the American Songbook. I will include more about this new emerging genre of music in future editions of Connections.

You can learn many other things from Myspace in this article I will spotlight some of the History of Entertainment sites. One of those sites is Bob Moore “Big Bass Man” He is a history on to himself of bass music. Moore has “performed on over 17,000 documented recording sessions or about 50,000 songs.

Bob Moore is the key component, the "soul glue" whose distinct and commanding contra Bass lines provide the cohesive element that held together over 1000 top ten songs and thousands of charted international hit records”. There are many tribute sites of entertainers that have passed away. Some sites for Moore’s friends include Ray Brown Jr., Matt Hilton, Oscar Pettiford and Red Mitchell. His friends also include many of today’s bass players such as Dave Holland, Mark Gain and Randy Barnes.

Vintage Broadway is “preserving and promoting earliest years of Broadway Musicals. Their first major project a two-set CD from the 1903 The “Wizard of Oz Broadway” Musical won a Grammy nomination for best historical recording. I didn’t realize that there was a Broadway Musical of the Wizard of Oz that ran from 1903 to approximately 1911.

The Vintage Broadway site has many interesting friends. I found Radio Lulu “that promotes their internet radio station. It plays Louie Brooks inspired music from the 20’s through today’s music. Louie Brooks was a silent film star. Another of their friends is The American Phonograph Company is the oldest commercial sound recording Company. Today it is a hands on museum. They provide phonographs and sound recording equipment to the motion picture industry and musicians. They also offer wax cylinder recordings’. Site for Al Jolson, L Frank Baum and 78 RPM are among Vintage Broadways 640 + friends.

These are just a small sample of the site I have visited. I have enjoyed many hour exploring and learning about interesting entertainment information. Myspace is an entertainment geek paradise. In future Connections I will spotlight more of thee Myspace friends and sites.
