| HALLOWEEN MADNESS by Laura Velgos |
Laura Velgos with a scary dragon character at Fright Dome Photo: Zee Matulonis |
It was dark and spooky when I entered the Fright Dome at Circus Circus Hotel. The Bride of Frankenstein, bat people and Aliens came running towards me. Smoke and flickering lights were everywhere. I saw a scary magician onstage putting a giant hook thru his nose and holding a bowling ball on the hook, ouch! He also put knives and fire down his throat and threw darts at playing cards that were taped to his girl assistant’s stomach. It was unbelievable. |
I walked through a dark tunnel and came out to see a huge monster, bats with large waving wings and flashing red eyes. He was really frightening but he didn’t catch me. They were filled with screaming Zombies, bodies, coffins and strange things popping up in the dark. Weird looking Doctors were cutting and chopping. It was frightening for sure, but a fun scary Halloween treat. I love being scared. |

Gene Johnson,with a fan(L)and Jimmy Orlander(r)@The Meet& Greet Photos:Don Aho |
Diamond Rio performed for two nights at the Island Casino in Escanaba, Michigan in January of this year.Temperatures and snowfall were extreme that weekend, however all concerts were sold out. The concerts were energetic and a real treat to those in the Upper Peninsula at that time of year. The group soon warmed up everyone in the audience with their performance.Following the concert, I attended an invitation only Meet and Greet. All of the "boys" were very congenial and agreed to pictures and autographs. Gene Johnson was very, very nice to all the fans and joked a great deal with everyone. . The lead singer, Marty Roe was also very friendly and so appreciative when he accepted ECE’s Excellence In Entertainment Award for Favorite Group, I would highly recommend you seeing Diamond Rio if you get the chance. The quality of performance and their fan friendly attitude make them a class act. |

Covered by Zee Matulonis What happened in this film "CHUCK BERRY HAIL HAIL ROCK AND ROLL I was child of that generation that first listened to Rock and Roll. One of the first people I ever listened to and was most impressed with was Chuck Berry. I think he is by far the most talented and most important Rock and Roller there was. Most people agree. You ask Bob Dylan who was the first Rock and Roll Poet and he would say Bob Dylan. If you ask John Lennon and I open the movie with John Lennon saying if you had to give Rock and Roll another name it would be Chuck Berry. To John Lennon, Chuck Berry was his man. In this particular film I was blessed with having a collaborator and also one of the most famous Rock and Rollers in the world, Keith Richards who was the musical director of the film. Keith Richard says unabashfully said I stole every lick that Chuck Berry ever played. He was here specifically to celebrate the man who had such an influence on him. It was a chance to give back. But in this instance what happened and Keith called in a lot of favors and personally invited a lot of his friends who he knew had been influence same as him |
Robert Craig a black blues player who was just coming into his own at that time. So he was saying generationally Chuck started it all. He put together a fabulous band that Chuck never had in 30 years. You will see by accidentally and you will se in the film that I was able to capture Chucks M. O. Last 30 years here was a man that was very influential, literally travels alone to gigs.Chuck checks his guitar underneath in baggage. He picks up a band in whatever town he travels, because his attitude is that anyone who can play rock and roll can play Chuck Berry because you all start by playing Chuck Berry Songs. He goes on stage, doesn’t do a sound check, doesn’t care, puts on a great show, get back into his rental car, collects his money and he is handsomely. The local promoter has to pay the band. It is the lowest overhead in show business. It is a plane ticket, a rental car and that’s it. What happen in this film I will explain. We went down to St Louis because there was a concert scheduled for his 60th birthday. We were going to put on a memento concert at the Fox Theater. Which is this huge movie palace. Chuck was all for it. He made a deal with Universal for home video who was financiering the film and he was being handsomely paid for the rights. He was one of the producers of the film. We were invited, it is going to be a cool experience and we are there for a celebration. Little did we know that when you get involved with Chuck Berry, nothing is smooth. In that is one of the reasons I choose him to do the film. You talk about Rock and Roll being a rebel’s music. Well if there is any rebel really deserve the title. Chuck Berry has three jail terms to prove it. He is the real deal. He is a serious guy; He is older than a lot of the rock and rollers and was 29 when he had his first hit. A lot of these guys were teenagers. He worked hard jobs and had a life. Chuck was married with Kids He was a tough guy. He is a thorny, thorny individual, which is why I did the film.I have been asked to do many documentaries because I have a background in music. Honestly this subject a particular or contemporary rock and roller would be a perfectly fine benign film. But I am not interested in that. If you can get a personality that is interesting and explore that personality beyond what the normal people in public know, that’s worth doing. |

In the DVD I really could tell the other story. What really went on in making the film, and I think very entertaining. Plus the fact there is a lot of other things that is included like these great musical rehearsals. Then is the man himself. No one will ever truly get the real Chuck Berry. He will take his secrets to the grave. But, there were other things like a half hour of an interview with Robby Robertson that I couldn’t include in the film because it wasn’t excerptible enough. But if you see and watch them, they are going through a scrapbook of Chuck’s early days. Robbie by being the consummate musician and a real charmer could get Chuck to open up like no one else had. |
There are moments when you see Chuck Berry recite poetry. You realize when he went to prison when he was 18 years old he went to the library and read poetry. That is what made the difference and why he is a great artist. Bob Dylan and John Lennon two of the greatest rock poets of their generation said they would not be here if it wasn’t for Chuck Berry. In this film you will actually see him recite a 10-minute poem by heart. There were a lot of other things in the DVD that I really could explore. Like I got most of his co-creators of the art form to talk about what they were doing. You half hour interviews with Jerry Lee Lewis, Bo Diddley, Little Richard, The Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison and Sam Phillips of Sun Records. There is a lot of great stuff that you can hear from the real people. |

LOST VEGAS; THE LOUNGE ERA GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN by Peggy DavisThe Las Vegas strip has reshaped its’ landscape. It has put on a new face and has embraced corporate America. But none of this new motif could have been possible without generations past. A great deal of gratitude is owed to the Legends of Las Vegas People like Peter Anthony, Freddie Bell, Mary Kay, Sonny King, Babe Pier and many others who have paved the way during those Golden Lounge days of Las Vegas. Finally a film that’s been made by Beth Abrohams and Tom Onosko that tells the true story of those early years. Now the history has been written and it is a documentary. Never look back, but respect those that have made entertaining in Vegas a lot easier. Viva Las Vegas! |

AN EVENING WITH TOM JONES by Linda HungOn April 7, 2005 my husband and I attended a real treat – A live concert from Tom Jones at the Potawatomi Indiana Casino Theater in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. We were about 10 feet from the gusty vocals and sexy image of Tom Jones He still excites his mostly (no kidding!); women audience that still has some throwing their underwear at him. For more than four decades this pop idol has thrilled us with top 40 hits such as Delilah, Help Yourself, Green Green Grass of Home and of course What’s New Pussycat. Jones keeps re-inventing himself and even in the 90’s launched a comeback by recording an album with Van Morrison He also appeared alongside acts like Sting, Pink Floyd, Bryan Adams and George Michaels. I think Tom Jones will go on turning on his audience with his music for many years to come |

Polly’s People, Places and Things by Polly Peluso |
We will all miss the exciting Clint Holmes when he leaves Harrah’s soon to do his own show in London or New York. Clint comes from an interesting background of music: his father was a black musician and Mother a white opera singer. Quite often he tells their story during his show. His mother would often sing near the end of his show at Harrah’s. I wonder if Clint new show plans includes girl friend Kelly Clinton. My old boss Hugh Hefner and I are both in our 80’s now. He is still going strong and his new show "The Girls next Door" (those 3 beautiful blonde girls that live with him) is doing great. I had some very exciting times working for Hef. At most parties I would see James Caan, Tony Curtis, Bill Cosby, Dudley Moore, Charlie Sheen, Abdul Jabar, Wilt Chamberlain, etc. At that time Chamberlain was the greatest basketball player of all time. He was also a fabulous architect. When he would invite me up to his home, you would cross a moat. You could not tell where the door was or a bell to ring but you only got that far anyway by invitation. So then the entire 3 floors would turn and that was the entrance. There was not one square room in the house. All rooms were round or horizontal. At a flip of a switch, the top floor would open up and then the entire sky was the roof |

CONVOLUTIONS ABOUT CONTORTIONS by Dale Matulonis |

Trio Mermaids |
It was quite a stretch to go to the International Contortionists convention from Sept. 26 through 28 at Sam’s Town just to see people all bent out of shape. Contortion has some resemblance to gymnastics except that it is at a much slower pace. The woman who organized it is local contortion instructor Ska von Scoening who has dual residence in Las Vegas and Germany. In Europe contortion usually runs in circus families, and training starts at an early age. The most interesting thing to see is a group act such as the Trio Mermaids in which coordination in timing is a prime factor |

NAMM A GUITAR LOVER’S PARADISE by Dave Roll |
Bill Minarik and Dave Roll |
Jason Everly |
The National Association of Musician Merchandise held its’ summer show for the first time in downtown Indianapolis at the Convention center. Thanks to Bill Minarik of Minarik Guitars and being in my hometown I was able to attend this very special event. It was awesome for this Guitar nut to walk the distance at the convention center looking at guitars, picks, strings, audio equipment and even drums. One of the first places I stopped was to meet Bill Minarik at his Minarik Guitars. He is a wonderful person and it was really great to meet him. I looked over his guitars and what great style they have. My next stop by popular request from the Everly Board gang was to meet Jason Everly. For non-Everly fans, Jason is the son of Phil Everly. He must be very proud that his son has grown I spent several hours at the show. Two other booths to note that I stopped at were Jasmin St Clair of Coffin Guitar Cases and Peavey Guitars. One small disappointment I am sad to say Gibson guitars was not at this NAMM show. But the whole NAMM show was a very electrifying experience talking to people about the various guitars. The next show is in January in Anaheim, Ca |

| Fest for Beatle Fans July 1 – 3 2007 By Charlene Kellenberg |
Charlene Kallenberg with Paul Salrzman |
I am a fan of many musicians: The Everly Brothers, Moody Blues, Chris Isaak, Paul Revere and the Raiders. But before they came along, I was and always will be a Beatles fan. BeatleFest, or Fest For Beatles Fans as it’s called now, is usually held in New York, Chicago or New Jersey. Very rarely do they come out West. When I heard that there would be a Fest in Las Vegas at the Mirage to coincide with the first anniversary of Cirque Du Soleil’s “Love” I made my vacation plans. |
Martin Lewis, a Beatles historian served as official host of the festivities. On stage discussions were an important part of the festival. First guest was Paul Saltzman with a slide presentation of his photos of the Beatles in India. He was there at the same time they were to visit the Maharishi to learn Transcendental Meditation. The photos he took, however few, are stunning .Next was Philadelphia’s own Larry Kane who spoke of the privilege he had of traveling with the Beatles on several tours as official reporter. He mentioned the respect they had for him as he was one of the few reporters to show them respect. Bruce Spizer was next. He’s written several books on Beatles records, their rarity and value. He offered insight into some of the shady deals that some recording companies got away with back then. |

Musical guests included Peter and Gordon, Mark Hudson of the Hudson Brothers and producer of several of Ringo’s solo albums. Three members of Wings: Denny Laine, Denny Seiwel and Laurence Juber.A tribute band “Liverpool” performed as house band as well as solo. Monday night they performed the entire Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band LP in its entirety complete with a short break after Mr. Kite to “turn the record over.” We all cheered. It is good to know that vinyl is still alive and well, at least in our memory. |

While all this was going on at the main stage, there was more activity going on in smaller rooms. Beatles sound-alike and Name that Tune contests, an autograph room, a merchandise room where you could even have your Beatles collectable appraised. I overheard several people asking Mark Lapidos, the founder and producer of Fest, if they will be back in Vegas next year. “Have to wait and see.” I’m optimistic

"Dreamgirls,” High on Glitz |
by Zillah (Zee) MatulonisDreamgirls is a dazzling looking film. Its A-List cast includes Jamie Foxx (Curtis Taylor JR), Beyonce Knowles (Denna Jones) and Eddie Murphy (James”Thunder” Early). The film also boasts direction by Bill Condon who wrote, and directed “Chicago” one of the best movies in recent years. There is also beautiful cinematography, costumes, makeup lighting, and great musical performances. Newcomer Jennifer Hudson, who plays Effie Melody White, delivers a tremendous performance that steals the film. Her energy and emotional acting and musical performances are the highlight of the film. She delivers one of the best ever-musical performances in a film with her rendition “I’m Telling You I’m Not Going”. Eddie Murphy also surprises everyone with a good singing performance as James “ Thunder” Early a sex happy, cheating, singing star jerk. His acting gives what it can to the role and should open up his career to more diverse roles. Turbulent rise to fame often goes with the territory of a musical career. That is the basic story line of “Dreamgirls”. We tag along with the ” Dreamettes”. (A female singing group loosely based on The Supremes) as they journey to the top. Along the way we also see the journey of Curtis Taylor a music business want-a-be mogul (loosely based on Barry Gordy Jr. and Motown). There is also the story of James “Thunder” Early a male soul superstar. The film takes place in the 60’s an emotionally charge time of civil rights and Martin Luther King, Jr. This film is supposed be about how all the elements relate with each other. “Dreamgirls” hit high notes with glitz and dazzle but falls flat in emotion, relationships, writing, and directing. It especially falls flat with one-dimensional characters. For instance the "Early" character is shown as talented but a jerk as a person. He succumbs to drugs. We are never given a reason other that he is a “star” to care other than good-bye and good riddance. The talent of Jamie Foxx is wasted with the lack luster writing of his character. As a result Fox comes off with a very week performance. Beyonce brings her name, a great voce, but little else to her role. But then she may not be experienced enough to overcome a poorly written and directed script. The biggest element lacking in this film is emotion. I remember how emotionally charged the 1960’s were especially to African American people. Even King’s "I Have A Dream” speech is given a ho-hum reaction when Effie complains that King is an amateur who gets a whole album with his speech and she can’t even get a single. I am not a professional movie critic. When I occasionally get an invite to a special preview I usually enjoy the entertainment aspect of the film. My experience with “Dreamgirls” is I enjoyed the films musical performances and its’ glitz. But, I would have enjoyed it better if there were more emotion and more substance to the film.
| EVAN ALMIGHTY DELIVERS ALRIGHTY | Zee Matulonis | ecezee@yahoo.com | The budget to make the film “Evan Almighty” according to Internet Movie Database was $175 million dollars. When asked about it during the movies News Junket, Tom Shadyac the director said, ”It is one of the cheapest summer movies, but it is a comedy and that’s unique. But we are much more than a comedy we are a Biblical epic, we had an ark, we had thousands of animals, we had a flood that helped. If you look at the screen I can point specifically to where the money goes, CD generation of water and composite shots that are 100 layers thick and deep. I am also glad that a comedy is being given this much belief by a studio; that a comedy is being taken this seriously. But again we are a Bible story too a Bible parable”.That is the key here why the studio has belief in Evan Almighty. It is a Biblical story that the whole family can enjoy. Evan Almighty in my opinion is the best movie of the year so far and this come from a cynic of faith based movies. The movie does have positive messages of a faith in prayer, kindness and respect, but it is more in the style of the old “Oh God” films than of any specific religious orientations. | Couresy of Evan almighty/Universal | Evan Almighty is a movie the whole family can enjoy. It is great entertainment for the adults that will mesmerize the children; I attended a special screen of Evan Almighty with a whole theatre a kids of all ages. They were so enthralled with the movie that you could of hear a pin drop. Join the dance of celebration and give yourself an act of kindness and go see Evan Almighty. Don’t forget the kids because Evan Almighty definitely delivers alrighty entertainment. | |

"The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" by Polly Peluso |
Release Jan.11,08From one of the most emotionally exhilarating and luminous bestsellers ever written comes the true story of a man who took an adversity beyond all imagining and transformed it into a testament to the irrepressible human urge to love, create and dream. With his third film, director and artist Julian Schnabel forges a visually stunning, heart-stirring ode to what drives a man to go on when all truly seems lost. Through a mesmerizing blast of color, beauty and humor and a rousing spirit of creativity, Schnabel tells the story of Jean-Dominique Bauby (Mathieu Amalric, "Munick," "Kings and Queens"), AKA "Jean Do, the high flying editor of French Elle and father of two, who was renowned for his sense of humor and style, his joie de vivre and amorous energy, when, in an instant, his world was plunged into the depths of catastrophe.Faced with a harrowing predicament, Jean-Do will use enormous courage and determination but, most of all, his soaring imagination to escape from his trap. Tapping into the limitlessness of his memories, fantasies, wit and wishes, he finds a way to race through experiences of wonder and grief, sex and love, fatherhood and childhood, faith and questioning, ecstasy and absurdity - and touches the very essence of what is is to be human. Along the way he is buoyed by a quintet of remarkable women: Celine (Emmanuelle Seiger), the mother of his children who remains devoted to him despite his betrayal; Ines (Agathe de la Fontaine), the girlfriend who still haunts him; Henriette (Marie-Josee Croze) and Marie Olatz Lopez Garamendia), who give Jean-Do the power to reconnect with the world and his loved ones; and Claude (Anne Consigny), who becomes his ravishing literary assistant. George Wallace Show with War and Mosaic |
January 18, 2007 by Zee Matulonis George Wallace is hilarious! We didn’t stop laughing from the opening video segments until his last bit of funniness. His bits included his usual “People Say Stupid Things,” “I’ve Been Thinking” and poking fun of his having the same name of George Wallace, the former segregationist Governor. The comedian George Wallace is doing his act from a chair these days because he tore his Achilles tendon during a private show last month at the Bellagio. “It’s going to be called Georges next year”. He also told about coming across to do his own show at the Flamingo right after he injured his leg. “They wanted me to do the show from a wheel chair but I was afraid people would confuse me with the other George Wallace.” Mosaic, the wonderful young male acappella group that uses their voices as instruments to accompany their vocals performed within Wallace’s act. He introduced them as his kids. They performed one song and then Wallace introduced each of them and while they sang a short solo did a very funny bit about how he met each of their mothers. Then the group started a Gospel song. During the song a woman that was probably planted in the audience acted like she was in a church, sang along, stood up, waved her arms and proceeded towards the stage. She performed very well as a convincing “straight-woman” to Wallace’s funny shtick. The woman using a wonderful singing voice sang with Mosaic to finish the song and the segment. “War” the 70’s Funk band opened the show as special guests during the first couple of weeks in January. They performed some of their hits that include “The Cisco Kid”, “Why can’t we be Friends” and “The World Is A Ghetto”. Leroy “Lonnie” Jordan is the only current member who is an original member of War. I was not impressed with the bands performance. We have so many better and talented performers in Vegas who could use the work and exposure that would come from a special guest appearance with the George Wallace Show. Or it would have been very enjoyable if Mosaic did their usual role and opened the show. The show is different each night as Wallace says” I never know what I am going to do or who will be in the audience”. The show is 10pm, Tuesday thru Saturday at the Flamingo in Las Vegas. Tickets are $65.95 to $82.50, 702-733-3333. |

GET SMART REVIEW |
|
“Get Smart” is a fun movie, with enough laughs and action that seem to connect more positively with the male than female audience members that attended the Special Charity Screening at Planet Hollywood. There were good performances by Ann Hathaway, Dwayne Johnson, Alan Arkin, Terrence Stamp, James Cann and Bill Murray in their respective roles. However I thought Steve Carell would have brought something more to his role as Maxwell Smart. His portrayal of Maxwell Smart reminded me of a blundering “Monk”. I enjoyed his role in “Evan Almighty” more. In fact I enjoyed the Evan Almighty movie much more than I enjoyed Get Smart. My recommendation, go see “Get Smart” if you want to cool off, relax, and enjoy a few laughs. Or stay home, save money, watch “The Monk” on TV and wait for “Get Smart” to come out on DVD. |

The Duchess by Renee Matulonis |
Directed by Saud Dibb Stars: Charlotte Rampling, Ralph Fiennes,Hayley Atwell, Keira KnightleyI recently went to see the movie The Duchess. The movie is based on the true story of Georgiana, the Duchess of Devonshire who was the toast of 18th century London and a distant ancestor of the late Princess Diana. She turns heads with her fashion sense and becomes involved with politics. After repeated rejection fro m her cold husband, she has a scandalous affair with a young, ambitious politician who eventually becomes Prime Minister or Britain. I found the move to be quite delightful.

BOB ANDERSON IS BACK IN LAS VEGAS |
Editor Note: Bob Anderson Returned to Las vegas doing two shows at The Cannary. Here are two reviewsBOB ANDERSON’S “GOLDEN AGE OF VEGAS” SHOW, FEBRUARY 14, 2009 BY MARY KROVITZ It was great to see Bob perform again in Las Vegas as a good friend of his for over twenty years, he surely h as been missed on the Las Vegas strip the past five years. His performance at the Cannery was to a sold out crowd and he delivered many of his songs in his own voice, which is very good in itself. He also did not disappoint when he sang the favorites we had all come to know with his impressions of Tom Jones, Sammy Davis, Mel Torme, Andy William, bobby Darin and of course Tony Bennett, plus many others. A touching moment was when he sang to Mrs. Robert ((Vera) Goulet with his version of “If I Ever Leave You,”,,, I had an opportunity to talk Mrs. Goulet after the show, and she related a story to me that her husband had taught Bob Anderson how to reach back in his throat for the tone only Robert Goulet had. Bob Anderson did him proud and she was very happy. Many of his friends in were the audience. They included Lorraine and Dennis Bono, Steve Rossi, Norm Johnson, Babe Pier and his former musical director Billy Stevenson. Bob is planning to return to perform in Las Vegas in August, 2009 |
BOB ANDERSON REVIEW AT THE CANNARY BY Helen StoneBob Anderson opened his show singing Sammy Kahn’s songs I using his own voice.. Then he proceeded to do impressions of Dean Marin, Sammy Davis Jr, and Frank Sinatra. Tom Jones, Fred Asiare, Tony Benet, Louie Armstrong, Jack Jones and Andy Williams were among many other impressions he did. He also told many tidbits including a story about his friendship with Glen Campbell. The show was very entertaining. His impressions were very good. The band was also very good.
