SPRINGTIME CINEMA |

Three film events dominated ECE’s coverage of Las Vegas events. They were Las Vegas International Film Festival, the Green Carpet Premier of “Ace Ventura Jr” and the Dam Short Film Festival in Boulder City, NV.Dale, Renee and Zee Matulonis Covered the 2009 Las Vegas International Film Festival (LVFF}, April 9-12 at the Eastside Cannery. Congratulations to the LVFF because they successfully showed how film festivals should be done. Film festivals should be as much about the filmmakers as well as great screenings for viewing. The LVFF succeeded in both areas. They had great films to be enjoyed by the audience and panels for filmmakers All three of us saw two documentaries, “Prom Night Mississippi” and “Stars and Their Guitars”. “Prom Night in Mississippi” centers around an offer by Morgan Freeman to the Charleston High School board to pay for the first ever integrated Senior Prom. In 2008 Charleston Mississippi where Freeman lives held separate proms for Whites and Blacks. While Freeman is featured in film the real stars are the students of Charleston High School. The film was directed by Paul Saltzman (see Zee’s Interview with Saltzman on Connections Online).

John Saxon accepting his LVIFF Best Supporting Role for “God’s Ears” |
We separated for three screening of features. Renee saw “How to Be” starring Robert Pattinson (Twilight, Harry Potter series)./Dale went to the screening of “Like Dandelion Dust” starring Barry Pepper(Saving Private Ryan) and Mira Sorvino, (Oscar winning Actress) . “God’s Ears” starring John Saxon (Enter the Dragon) and Michael Worth (Acapulco H.E.A.T) was seen by Zee. Worth also directed the film. “God’s Ear’s is independent filmmaking at its best. It’s a wonderful and heartwarming story about Noah Connelly (Worth) a young adult man living with Autism. What an amazing performance by Worth in this role. During the Q & A following the film someone asked him who the actor that played Noah was, and he said me, everyone was surprised. His transition into the role really is an Oscar worthy performance. “How To Be”, Renee’s film is about Art, his girlfriend, Ronny, his friend and Dr. Levi Ellington, self-help guru. It was the most popular film of the festival with three sold out screenings. Renee who saw the film said, “It was a wonderfully quirky film that was worthy of the long lines to see the film”. Since Renee was Press she was able to go to the front of the line. Dale’s Film “Like Dandelion Dust” dealt with the conflict of custody between adoptive and biological parents. He said,“It is a well-done tear-jerker. It raised the question of economic class and some people felt that the ending was too sweet and didn’t reflect reality. I thought the ending was the way it should be”. LVFF had its’ celebrities, John Saxon, legendary actor and Golden Globe winner and Barry Pepper, nominated Emmy actor among his films are “Saving Private Ryan”, “Enemy of the State”, and “Flags of our Father”. John Saxon received LVFF 2009 Best Supporting Role Award and Barry Pepper was presented with LVFF 2009 Best Actor award for his role in “Like Dandelion Dust” Both participated in separate conversations with local Vegas TV host, Tony Sacca. |

Writers Panel |
|
|
The film festival had panels for both producers and those who were interested in what it takes to do a film. Those panels were Writers, Directors and Producers Panels. We attended the writers’ panel and found it very informative. Harriet Spizziri Director-Writer of the film “In My Living Room” was on that panel. She is also the founder of Next Theater in Evanston, Illinois. I was able to peg her for an interview about the Chicago Theater scene (see Connections online) The Las Vegas Film Festival was a joy to attend. LVFF GREAT JOB!

SPECIAL SHOWCASES HIGHLIGHTS OF DAM SHORT FILM FESTIVAL |
Showcases by Kurt Kuenne and Jay Rosenblatt were my highlights of the Dam Short Film Festival held in Boulder City, Nevada February 11-14, 2009. Both of these filmmakers are extremely talented with films that really draw you into them. But the contrasts in their subject matter are like day and night. The “Rent A Person Quadralody The Musical Mind of Kurt Kuenne” showcased four films. They really were like a symphony visions with comedy and music. “Rent A Person” was about a bathroom attendant’s journey to the rich and famous lifestyles. He does this with aspirations of happiness and romance. “Validation” is about a parking lot attendant helps people ratify a fine day by making them smile. He is usually successful except for one young lady. His goal then is to make her smile. In “Slow” a construction undertakes a journey to accelerate his slow and boring life. “Phonebook” is about bringing people together. |

Jay Rosenblatt |
In the Question & Answer following the films Kuenne told about his inspiration for “Slow” that came through a poem emailed to him by his former college professor. Kuenne said, "The poem was about someone who saw their life through someone else’s life". I couldn’t decide what “Slow” was about. But after reading the poem it was Yes! That’s what “Slow is about. It’s not some romance thing but it’s this person helps him to see his own environment through different eyes for the first time and to appreciate it”. Kuenne’s films show unique perspectives about everyday stuff. All four of the films’ stories stand alone but they often have aspects that connect with each other.“The Works of Jay Rosenblatt” showcase presented six films. They were “The Smell of Burning Ants,” “Human Relations”, “I Just Want to be Somebody”, “Phantom Limb”, “Afraid So”, and “I used To Be A Film Maker”. All of the films were documetaires. All of them magnificantly done, poignant, but five out of the six were of dark subjects. The film “Phantom Limb” gives insight to the reason why. It is a self psychological biography of Rosenblatt trying to come to terms with the death of his six year old brother when he was eight. His most recent film “I Use To Be A Filmmaker” was the last one to be shown and was much lighter than the others and had to do with Rosenblatt ‘s relationship to his daughter. When asked during the Q & A following the films if the lighter film about his daughter will future films be more positive subject matter, Rosenblatt replied “My next film is about sucide. But I have done three more comic documentaries with her. So it’s been a really nice balance to do darker films with help by doing the lighter works. Its kind of different to make a film where there‘s laughter from the audience. It’s very satisffying to a filmaker.” Meanwhile Kurt Kuenne has done several other films including Drive in Movie Memories that has been shown on PBS and Dear Zachary a serious subject movie that has been shown many times on CBNBC. His current plans is to do three more installments to complete a Rent A Person anthology with hopes of releasing it in a limit run theatrical feature and DVD. |

The Dam Short Film festival is an international event. In the screening of ”Strange Worlds” presentation there were films from the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zeeland and one from Japan “String Phone” by filmmaker Kazuhito Nakae that flew in to attend the festival. Nakse explained during the Q &A that the film was about the importance of listening when communicating. My husband and daughter attended the International Crime presentation that featured two films from the UK and two from France. They both describe them as Psychopathic films. But they thought that Mother Mine by Susan Everett, a film about an adopted woman seeking her birth mother was the best. Winner of the Dam Short Film Festival were: Documentary: "Armed for the Challenge" Horror/Sci-Fi: "In the Dark" Animation: "Gerald's Last Day" Student: "The Early Nineties" Drama: "Things We Do for Love" Nevada: "Growing Up Vegas" Comedy: "A Death in Progress" Audience Favorite: "The Early Nineties"

CINEVEGAS 2008 OPENING NIGHT PRESENTATION "THE ROCKER" |
Petter Cattaneo, Director; Photos, Dale Matulonis |
The arm says it all! Rainn Wilson is "The Rocker" |
by Zee MatulonisCinevegas 2008, The Las Vegas Film Festival kicked off, Thursday evening with the World Premiere of “The Rocker”. On the Red Carpet were Stars Rainee Wilson, Emma Stone, Lonny Ross, Fred Amison and Jane Lynch. Peter Cattaneo, director and producer Tom McNulty and Ryan Jaffe story writer also represented the film on the Red Carpet. Festival executives Dennis Hopper, Chairman of the Creative advisory Board, Robin Greenspun President, Danny Greenspun, Trevor Groth, Artistic Director were also on the Red Carpet. Palms Owner George Maloof, Johnny Brenden owner of Brenden Theater and colorful, costumed cast of character completed the Red Carpet kick off opening of Cinevegas 2008. When I asked director Peter Cattaneo that did the same task for “Full Monty” what he brought from that film into making “The Rocker” his answer “Naked Men!” The film is a really good film that will crossover generations but will probably appeal to the classic rock or 80’s music fans. The music is hard rock but with vocals and words that you can understand. In 2008 “Hustle & Flow” original song “Its Hard Out Here For A Pimp” won the Oscar for Best Original Song. I wonder if history will repeat itself with an original song from “The Rocker”. More from "The Rocker" in the Summer Print Editon of Fans Connection out July 2008. |
