WELCOME TO FAN CLUB COOP AND FANS CONNECTIONS |
From Left: Tommy Smothers, Terrie Neilson, and Dick Smothers with Scrapbook Two |
Kathleen Dunbar |
The Fan Club Cooperative is a service for professional entertainers that are paid members of ECE. We need to do it this way because ECE is a 501c7 nonprofit organization and regulations under this classification state that 90% of the services we provide must be for members only. However for just the cost of membership, Entertainers can have a fan club with fan club services provided by ECE. Plus those people who join that entertainer’s fan club will also get a dual membership in ECE. Space will be dedicated in both Connections and Fans’ Connection for news and information for entertainers in the Fan Club Cooperation. Fans’ Connections is a new service of special interest groups that brings together people who share an interest in specific entertainers and/ or whole genres of entertainment. Our ECE’s members sponsor them. For more information about the Fan club Cooperative or Fans Connections you can email the above link.Or you can contact the Coordinator or Representatives via email below. |

LIBRARY OFFERINGS FOR ADULT ANIME FANS by Renee Matulonis Fans Connections Rep |
Recently, I discovered an adult anime appreciation group that meets at the Clark County Library at 1401 E. Flamingo road in Las Vegas, Nevada once a month. They meet the third Saturday of each month usually 2 PM. The group watches an episode or two of various series usually having to do with a theme or from the different genres of anime. They show some classic anime and the pass couple months we have gotten to preview new upcoming series. There is brief discussion and they serve a Japanese “snack”. In Sept we had rice crackers and this past month we sipped green tea while we watched vampire themed anime. On November 17th, the library is having an anime fest with a special start time of 11am and will show back- to-back episodes of various series. It will almost be a mini anime festival. In December it will be Anime that defies Description with spotlight on ADV’s Nerima Daikon Brothers. Renee Matulonis with one of her adult anime films Also while visiting family and friends in Lake County, Illinois I discovered that the Lake Villa Library at 1001 E Grand Ave has a great adult anime collection. Since where we were staying didn’t have cable television and the regular channel reception was fussy, I spent several evenings enjoying an adult anime selection from the Lake Villa Library. If you live near there and like adult anime you should check it out.

Bob & Corrie Sachs’ Fans Connection:By Bob Bandyk bbandyk@cox.netHello everyone, my name is Bob Bandyk and I’m the Fan Connection Rep. for Bob & Corrie Sachs who have been on the Las Vegas entertainment scene for over 20 years and I hope to give you a little insight on what it took them to get here. |

| CORRIE SACHS |

Corrie Sachs (nee Corrie A. Bedell) was born in Omaha, NE on Nov. 21st. She is the youngest of three children born to Frank and Alice Bedell. She has two older siblings, one brother-Chuck and one sister-Judi. Corrie started singing and dancing at age 3. In the late 60’s her parents moved to Miami, FL, where she continued her singing and dancing through high school. At age 15, Corrie started her professional career by joining a group called “The Lemon Twist Show Stoppers” and performing at the Diplomat, Eden Roc and Fontainbleau Hotels. She also continued her vocal training at the University of Miami. |
At the age of 18, she decided to “take to the road” and hone her skills. For the next 15yrs she performed in Atlantic City (Production show, “DAZZLE”, Starring in “The Showboat Follies”, and performing in shows at various casinos). She also has performed in other venues all over the country. She has performed in USO Tours in Europe and Saudi Arabia. She has opened for such stars as Bob Hope, Bob Newhart and Allen and Rossi. Then in 1984, she met this Alec Baldwin look-alike when he was playing a gig at Resorts International in Atlantic City. |

|
In 1986, she decided to move to Las Vegas with that Alec Baldwin look-alike, and has been here, with him, ever since. In 1987 Bob and Corrie were married. They raised a son, Heath, who has grown up to be the pride and joy of their lives. While living in Las Vegas the past 21yrs., Corrie has continued to work hard and bring enjoyment to all of the people who have seen her perform. In the 50’s Brenda Lee was called “Little Miss Dynamite”. That title would describe Corrie to a “T”. She can do it all, sing, dance, comedy, hosting and anything else you might ask her to do. |

Corrie has a varied entertainment portfolio. She has starred in Viva Las Vegas (Sands), American Superstars (Flamingo & Luxor) and Honky Tonk Angels & Serendipity (Gold Coast Hotel/Casino). She has played in almost every show room in Las Vegas, Reno and Lake Taho |

Corrie has paid tribute to many of the recording stars from the 60’s to present time. Some of the stars she has given tribute to are: Connie Francis, Faith Hill, Martina McBride, Nancy Sinatra, Petula Clark and, of course the one she is most famous for in Las Vegas, Reba McEntire. She was dressed as Reba at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas a few years ago, and caused a lot of excitement because everyone thought she actually was Reba. For the last seven years Corrie has been co-host of “The Dennis Bono Show”. You can hear the wide variety of songs she can do. She sings old standards, some country, old rock and roll, ballads, swing, Broadway, etc. She has great feeling and style for all the songs she performs, either as a tribute artist or as herself She recently signed a contract with REVE Records and has released a CD entitled “Stand Up For Truckers”. It has been getting play on the ‘Bill Mack Show” on XM radio. You can hear some of her recordings and see a Video of her at the REVE Records website, |

Bob calls himself a Bassist, Arranger and Educator. That he is, and a whole lot more.Richard and Ruth Sachs’ son Bob was born in Queens, NY on Oct. 15th. He has an older brother and two younger sisters. Bob is number two son, so he always tries harder. At about six years old Bob started playing his first musical instrument, an accordion. Over the years Bob has also learned to play guitar, saxophone, piano, the bass guitar and his first love (behind Corrie) the acoustic bass. Bob played in various bands around the NYC and New Jersey Area through his Middle, and High School years, mainly playing bass. After he graduated High School, he decided to leave the NYC area and head to warmer climates. He enrolled in Arizona State University (ASU) in Tempe, AZ. This is where Bob found he liked playing the acoustic bass most of all. While at college, he played gigs around the Phoenix area. Bob graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Education Degree. Before he graduated, he started playing with the Armand Boatman Trio. After graduation Bob stayed in the Phoenix area with the Trio. After about 10 yrs, he decided it was time to move on, so he came to Vegas in 1979. |

His latest accomplishment is that he obtained his Real Estate license and is now selling homes. Bob says, “If you’re looking for a house or condo, give me a call”. As I write this article Bob is currently working with Joe Piscopo at the Hilton and at UNLV in the Broadway show “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown”. |

In a 2004 book by photographer Carole Dellmyre titled “Jazz—Las Vegas” Bob’s philosophy on music was quoted. He stated “If I can use the power of music to touch people’s emotions and bring a smile to their faces, then I have done my job”. Bob has put smiles and touched the emotions of thousands of people that have heard him play. Keep up the good work BobBob and Corrie Sachs are just two of the hard working entertainers in the Las Vegas Entertainment Community. There are many talented people you never hear about if you don’t live in the Vegas area. Bob and Corrie just happen to be two of the BEST, in their respective areas. You can see how most of these people really love to perform or they wouldn’t go through all of the trouble and hard work, travel, etc. they go through to hone their talents to make sure you have a good experience when you go to see them. |

|
If you are in the Vegas area do yourself a favor, come see the Dennis Bono Show at Sam’s Town Casino on Thursdays at 2:00pm. You will not only hear Bob play, but hear Corrie sing. SCARY MOVIES SHINE AT ‘A NIGHTMARE TO REMEMBER’ |
Charlene Kallenberg |
Courtesy Photo |
BY Charlene KallenbergDo you like scary movies? I do. Independent horror films, in particular, is my favorite. Why? Indie filmmakers, unlike major filmmakers, are sometimes able to sneak past censoring laws and the rating system. Thereby resulting in awesomely graphic bloodshed, mayhem and fun. (Like, for instance, Rob Zombie’s romp, House of 1,000 Corpses.) Don’t be afraid of Indie films – be VERY afraid. On June 21st at the Opera Plaza Cinema in San Francisco, independent horror filmmakers and fans gathered beneath the Solstice moon for “A Nightmare to Remember Film Festival” hosted by Reyna Young, John Gillette and their Last Doorway Productions. Reyna started Last Doorway Productions about 2 years ago following the release of her first short film entitled Uninvited. John Gillette soon joined as co-owner. . Together they have made eight short films, created an online show called “The Last Doorway Show” and a Miss Misery comic book based on Reyna’s character that hosts the show. “A Nightmare to Remember” was also an evening to celebrate - a time to recognize and pay tribute to local horror celebrities. John Stanley, long time host of Creature Features, received a special award. Horror Achievement awards were given to Joe Flynn and Priscilla, hosts of “The Joe Flynn Show,” which has been on the air for more than seven years. The winning entries of this year’s film festival were: 1st place: #19 – Tommy Merry 2nd place: The Cleaner – Michelle Fatale 3rd place: Reversal – Rock Shaink The U.S. premiere of Mathew Saliba’s Vampyros Lesbos ended the evening on a high note. “I am very happy with the event,” Reyna said. “There was a great turn out and everyone had nothing but positive feedback to give us. And yes, there will be a ‘next year.’” What lies ahead for Last Doorway Productions? “Our future plans are to keep going with this and hopefully get a chance to help other Independent artists.” You can find out more about Reyna and John’s production company and view the Last Doorway Show by visiting their website. Once there, you are invited to view the various short movie trailers. But beware. Some are not for the faint at heart – or those under 18. |

| Smothers Brothers Scrapbook Project, | Terrie Neilson | bolton2000_hof@yahoo.com | On May 22, 2004, I had the honor and privilege of meeting the Smothers Brothers. I would meet them at the Tennessee Performance Arts Center in Nashville to give them their plaques for ECE (I forgot the official "title" we gave them) as well as the first of what isso far two scrapbooks. The second book was given to Tom and Dick on April 21, 2005, at The Orleans in Las Vegas. The first book was done more as a thank you present; the second one was done in the style of a high school yearbook. What made them both special is that both fans and “Smothers Others" alike got involved (Smothers Others are those in the first degree of separation who haveworked with Tom and/or Dick in some capacity past or present). Among the more well known Smothers Others who have participated are comedians Jack Swersie and Dom DeLuise, singer Kenny Rogers, Smothers BrothersComedy Hour alumni Mason Williams and Bob Einstein, and Las Vegas headliners Penn And Teller. |
| Due to the influx of responses, a third scrapbook is being made, this time with a "Road Trip" design. If you would like to be a part, simply send a contribution for me to include, whether it be words, pictures, or some other item. Contributions can be sent by either email or snail email. An online edition is being planned, and many already involved with the printed edition have agreed to be included. What is needed is suggestions as to layout and where online would be a good place to display it. | |

WHY I AM A SMOTHERS BROTHERS’ FAN By Terrie Neilson |
Dick Smothers |
Tommy Smothers |
“I’M Chet Huntley…” And I’m David Brinkley…”Most folks old enough to know would recognize those names as the classic news anchor team. But one overnight while watching ABC’s World News Now around 1997 would make anyone do a double take if t hey weren’t paying attention. Sitting at what is likely Peter Jennings’s anchor desk were Tom “Chet Huntley”, and Dick “David Brinkley.” Smothers, with laughter in the background by the news crew for their straight-faced introduction. The last time I saw them was in 1993 at Joliet, Illinois’, Rialto Theater. But, it felt like just yesterday. That is the way it always was with me when it’s awhile between seeing them on TV or in Concert. To explain, I am a third-generation Smothers Brothers’ fan. It seems silly to think of the possibility that three consecutive generations would continue a fanship, especially in this age of constantly changing tastes and newer younger performers whose careers last a fraction of a second. My mother and her mother tuned in during the 1967-69 run of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. When 1988 came around, it was my turn to see what it was that my mother had kept telling me about over the years. She remembered all the fuss made about their show and its cancellation. Her memories included the regular features such as officer, Judy AKA Bob Einstein, Pat Paulsen and the Brothers’ sibling act. But all the craziness surrounding the show didn’t matter to her; the show, Tom and Dick were funny! February 3, 1988 my mother and I sat together to watch The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour 20th Reunion. I have been a fan every since and a loyal one at that. Since that February day in 1988, I’ve channeled my fanship as a member of the 1988-90’s fan club. Now I have a fan page that has attracted good memories from those who have come to visit. I have see them live five times over the years, planning for number six in Nashville, May 2004. I have yet to experience a live Smother Brothers Show with a symphony accompaniment beyond an episode of Evenings of Pops years ago. So far, I have not met them, but from friends who have they it’s a fan-friendly experience. My mothers passed way in 1991, but I know they would please her if she saw them today. In her place my roommate’s son who came with me to see them, ironically at Rialto Square Theater in 2002 that I can now share my interest. While he is a teenager with current teenage tastes in entertainment, it’s promising to notice his appreciation in finding these “oldies”. And as it reads in the biography as posted on their official site, the Smothers brothers are “an American Classic”. As it should be. |

| A Tale of Three Events by Terrie Neilson | Terrie Neilson | Bolton2000_hof@yahoo.com | Terrie Neilson with John Cena | Three different kinds of WWE-related events took place July 28, 2007, and August 26, 2007. Early on July 28 was an autograph signing featuring then WWE champion John Cena. The crowd that gathered had lined up around the AT&T store on Paradise and Flamingo. With this many people, the interaction was brief, but Cena was very gracious and took pictures, autographed various items, and gave everyone a moment tp call their own. | That evening was a WWE Raw "live event", or house show. As opposed to a live TV taping event I attended April 2006, there were no flashy sets and fireworks, and the only cameras running were those by the sell-out crowd at Thomas And Mack flashing pictures of their favorite wrestlers. All the wrestlers would arrive to the ring with their respective entrance music and poses, and some would get on the microphone to get the appropriate crowd response for or against them. Pop and heat (wrestling words for cheers and boos) could be heard all night from the crowd. They cheered for "hometown favorite" Val Venis (whose wrestling character is billed as being from Las Vegas, but is in reality a good wrestler named Sean Morley who is from Toronto, Canada). They booed British snob William Regal, who cheated to win his match by holding the trunks of his opponent, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, while the referee wasn't noticing.A guy sitting across from me, dressed similar to Larry The Cable Guy. He had fun taunting and teasing during the tag team title match of Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch versus Paul London and Brian Kendrick. The match itself saw London and Kendrick bring their high-flying offense against the more grounded southern boys with the champions Cade and Murdoch retaining their titles. The match itself saw London and Kendrick bring their high-flying offense against the more grounded southern boys with the champions Cade and Murdoch retaining their titles. Carlito Caribbean Cool defeated Super Crazy (from Mexico) in a nice action-packed match. Newcomer Cody Rhodes, son of wrestling legend Dusty Rhodes, -was defeated by veteran King Booker. It was during this match that Booker took notice and reacted to my sign which read, "King Booker Should Be dethroned" (he was making claims that he was the only king of wrestling, which the crowd didn't agree with). | |

The women got a match in, Candice Michelle retaining the women's title against Melina, which allowed the guys a chance to cheer on some beautiful women as they wrestled. After an intermission where WWE Diva Jillian Hall tossed T-shirts out into the crowd, she breaks out into a Britney Spears parody, stopped by up-and-comer Santino Marella, who was stopped by the egotistal Mr. Kennedy/. The match was won by Mr. Kennedy, When he introduced himself in the beginning, he announced himself as winner of the match.Big man Umaga lost to Bobby Lashley as the big guy (6'4" and 350 pounds) missed a splash (a belly-flop dive) from the top rope onto Lashley, which Lashley capitalized and speared (football shoulder tackled) him for the win. The main event saw John Cena defeat main rival Randy Orton to retain the WWE championship. This match saw every sort of reaction from the crowd: cheering (for Cena), booing (for Orton, who had been on a sadistic binge of late, taking out all his opponents, particularly past and present legends), screaming, and standing on their feet for every move and moment. The crowd was spent after all that excitement. One month later, I attended the SummerSlam pay-per-view at Sam's Town (a WWE authorized "blast area"). In this case, I was watching a live wrestling event (taking place in New Jersey) as if I were watching a movie on giant screens. Though the viewing area was much smaller than the Thomas And Mack the place was packed and the crowd there was just as excited. We would watch as Kane (a face, a wrestling good guy despite his dark character) defeat the brutish Irishman Finlay (a heel, a wrestling bad guy). Big man Umaga defeated Carlito and Kennedy in a Triple Threat match (a three-person match with the first person getting a pinfall or submission over either opponent winning) to keep the Intercontinental title he had won between the July live event and this show. Rey Mysterio, a masked wrestler returning from a long rehab of a knee injury, returned to face the wrestler who "injured" him his former friend Chavo Guerrero. |
|
|
|
John Morrison (real name John Hennigan, who takes on the visage and attitude of late rocker Jim Morrison in the ring) retained his ECW Championship against the popular C.M. Punk, cheating by using the ropes while the referee wasn't noticing. Triple H (real name Paul Levesque, wrestling under the full ring name of Hunter Hearst Helmsley) returned from his own knee injury to defeat King Booker and stake his claim as wrestling's King Of Kings, Booker had claimed it at the July live event.Batista (first name Dave), 6'5" and 290 pounds, defeated the even larger Great Khali, 7'3" and 420 pounds, but since the match was not by pinfall or submission (Khali was disqualified for hitting Batista with a chair in plain view of the referee) by rules Khali retained the World Heavyweight Championship (the major title belt for Smackdown. John Cena staring down opponent Randy Orton before their WWE title match Beth Phoenix, who looks similar to Xena Warrior Princess, won a battle royal to be the Number One Contender for Candice Michelle's women's title. As he did at the live event in July, John Cena defeated Randy Orton to keep the WWE Championship (RAW's main title belt). The crowd at Sam's Town was in favor of Cena, the crowd in New Jersey seemed to favor the heel Orton despite his bad behavior, but both crowds were treated to a great match and a great pay-per-view event.

THE WRESTLER by Terrie Neilson |
"The Wrestler" is a fictional account of a professional wrestler, Randy "The Ram" Robinson (played by Mickey Rourke) who has seen his physical and money making primes pass him by. Twenty years ago he was the hottest wrestler covered in all the magazines. These days he is a wrestler moonlighting as a grocery store employee (or is it the other way around?), buying medications underground to treat the toll his career calling has done to his body. One night, after a particularly violent weapons-filled match, he suffers a heart attack that the doctor attributes to his past and present hard-living wrestling lifestyle. He retires from wrestling on doctor's orders, and cancels an upcoming comeback match. On the advice from a woman he has a soft spot for (Marisa Tomei, a single mother who works as a stripper in a local club to pay the bills), Randy looks to reach out to his long estranged daughter. Through his career and physical decline, he seems to keep from being too jaded by the past and is willing to accept blame for his mistakes. The urge for the comeback doesn't go away, and he chooses to un-retire despite health and personal risks. The film, written by Robert Seigel and directed by Darren Aronofsky, is done in an almost documentary style. The characters aren't interviewed, but the close camera work serves to provide the intimate thoughts. One scene follows Randy on a day at work at the grocery store. We hear what he is thinking as he moves from the lounge area to his work area: his name being announced for a match, the crowd chanting his name. The close camera work extended to the wrestling scenes, for which Mickey Rourke underwent wrestling training to accomplish. Afa Anoa'i, former wrestler, provided the training. Other wrestlers, including "Friday Night Smackdown’s” Ron "R Truth Killings”, participated in the film to provide a more "real" feel to the environment in and out of a wrestling ring. A wrestling fan watching this film will appreciate the effort made to examine and understand what is billed these days as "sports entertainment" and those who make a living in it. To those looking at wrestling for the first time, or to those who haven't seen it in a while, it is an unflinching but sympathetic film.
