| JAMES BURTON INTERNATIONAL GUITAR FESTIVAL |
by Renee Matulonis |
|
James Burton International Guitar festival was held in Shreveport, Louisiana and my mom and I covered the event for ECE. The festival was held on March 30th, 31st and April 1st and was used to raise money for the James Burton Foundation. One of things the Foundation does is sponsor the Kids R Rockin’ program. This program donates guitars and music lessons to schools and children in the Caddo Parish of Louisiana. |

On Sunday, April 1st there was a special concert featuring 600 kids from Caddo Parish who participated in the program to showcase what the James Burton Foundation does. Kix Brooks of Brooks & Dunn was James Burton special guest. Brooks is another great entertainer that was born and grew up in Shreveport. He relayed a story to the audience about how he got a ukulele when he was about 10 years old. He went on to say what a great thing it was to have a guitar, that no matter what happens or where you go, “if things aren’t going well for you in life the guitar will always be you friend.” |

On Saturday night there was the James Burton and Friends, Guitar Greats Concert at the historical Municipal Auditorium. Actor John Goodman emceed the event. Among the featured guest were, Chris Isaak. Rick Derringer, Steven Segal, Lee Roy Parnell and Doyle Dykes. Also performing were Muriel Anderson, Dickey Betts, Thom Bresh, The Cox Family and Ed King. Completing the line up were Monte Montgomery, Luca Oliver and James Burton. The highlight of the festival for me was meeting and having my picture taken with the sexy Chris Isaak before the concert |

Friday night and Saturday during the day the Part on the Plaza was held. It included 12 Louisiana area acts and a Guitar Talent Show. For the Friday night Party you couldn’t have asked for better weather. Betty Lewis and the Executives and Cajon Country Legend Jo El Sonnier were my favorites on Friday night’s show. The threat of severe weather that never materialized kept the crowd down during the day on Saturday. But the music was still great. A group called Crossroads and country singer Jason Ashley were my favorites on Saturday. My mom met and interviewed Ashley two years ago at the last Burton festival and he remembered her, so we hung around with them. That was really cool. And he is a really good performer. Saturday morning there was a guitar-playing talent contest. Burton along with John Goodman presented the winners of each category guitars. |

The party on the plaza I think was my favorite part of the Festival. It was a relaxing and informal way of enjoying the music. I liked it also because there were train tracks right next to it and I’m a big train buff and you had a train coming past about every 10 minutes. It was kind of cool too because the train sounds at times complimented the music. This James Burton Festival put on by this legendary guitarist will become a legendry memory for me. |

Doo-Wop Lives On at the Cool Bobby B Convention |

The second annual Cool Bobby Backman)'s two day Doo Wop Convention at the Alexis Park Hotel in Las Vegas Friday and Saturday November 16 & 17 was a sell out event. It is no wonder with all of the great legendary performers in attendance. There was The Fleetwood starring Gretchen Christopher, Harvey Fuqua and the Moonglows, the Olympics, Little Caesar and the Roman and the Murmaids were just a few of the legendary performers. All of the legendary groups had at least one of the original members present. Bobby Backman currently hosts “Doo Wop Stop” a nationally syndicated show heard locally in Las Vegas on XM satellite. Many of the performers attended because they respect Bobby B for keeping the music alive. Legendary guest superstar Jimmy Caster said I am here because I believe in Bobby B because he is the best I’ve heard since Alan Freed. |

Castor knew Alan Freed because at the age of 11 he traveled as Frankie Lyman’s understudy with the Teenagers. He also wrote their hit recording “I Promised to Remember” and told me about his early success, “It was a lot of fun for me. It made you not want to go to school. But my mother was very tight on me and she would only let me work weekends”. So because of his mom’s insistence of getting a good education Castor ended up at the prestigious New York City High School of Music and Arts and the Manhattan School of Music where he studied the “Classics" . Some of his own hits include “Hey Leroy You Mama’s Calling, Its Just Begun, Bertha Butt Boogie” and “King Kong”. Friday night was the opening event for the convention. As the crush of fans started pouring into the hall you knew this event was going to be successful. Castor said about that and the music. “They think it is a dying breed but it’s not. But you see more people coming through the door now that really appreciate this music." |

Fans came from across the country to attend the two day event. The first night activities included a sock hop, artist reception, autograph session and merchandise tables. Dee Wop Daddies, from Milwaukee, Goodfellas, Vicky Tafoga and the Redondos, Emerald Reams and Jimmy Castor performed at the Sock- Hop. They also performed with all of the Legends of Do Wop Saturdays at the Finale Concert. Saturday activities also included an amateur Doo Wop contest, car show, and more merchandise tables. |

Dee Dee Phelps of Dick and Dee Dee with Gretchen Chrisopher prior to the "Girl" of Rock and Roll interview |
Dee Dee Phelps of Dick and Dee fame didn’t perform during the convention but was there to sell and do a book signing for her book. She said “I was 16, a teenager and I just wrote about the experience in my book “Vinyl Highway”. I did a group on Early “Girls” in Rock interview with Phelps, Carol and Terry Fischer of the Murmaids and Gretchen Christopher of the Fleetwoods. Later I followed that with a Men of Early Rock interview with members of The Olympics and Little Caesar and the Romans. I also interviewed Johnny Keyes whose original band is The Magnificents that hit big with “Up On the Mountain” and they currently also perform with Harvey Fuqua as “The Moonglows”. Their stories and views vary but the one thing many of them agree on is that it is very hard for performers coming into the business now. Terry Fischer of the Murmaids said, “the corporations got into it about 20 years ago and it was impossible for anybody coming up to do anything because you had to have so much money. But, there is hope now with kids doing it on line and with all that there is a way that the talent will surface. The internet is the only hope right now”. Vel Omarr, lead and Tenor of the current Olympics said: “It was a lot easier to get played back then, than it is now. Like a new artist coming in today trying and getting something played. Even though I wasn’t performing then I know a lot about the history. Today it is almost impossible to get a major station to play anything from a new artist. That is why I think that the internet and other means of distributing music have come along; because now we can do it ourselves if we have to”. A more complete coverage of the interview will be found in Entertainments Consumers’ Exchange’ organization's Winter 2008, Connections Newsletter. |

David Caesar Johnson Belting it our at the Finale Concert |
A great ending to the convention was the Finale Concert. The performances of all of the artists were great. One real note worthy performance was that of David “Caesar” Johnson of Little Caesar and Romans, who walks slightly humped over and with a cane when he got on stage belted out a song and moved about like he did in his early days of performing. |

Doo Wop music is a genre of Rock and Roll. Experts often said rock and roll would never last. Don Everly half of my favorite performers the Everly Brothers always says, “You’re Never too Old to Rock and Roll”. While Don was not at the Doo-Wop convention his quote can really describe David “Caesar” Johnson’s performance The quote can also describe the sold out audience at Cool Bobby B Doo Wop Convention. Bobby B told the fans at the concert that this year’s convention attendance doubled last years and they expect to double it next year. The success of the convention proves that after 50 years our music still lives on. |

ROCKIN’ FOR A GOOD CAUSE (Click here for more photos) |
Darrin Buchanan & Evil Dick Donato |
by Zee Matulonis - Photos: Dale & Zee Matulonis“Rock Against Diabetes” brought high density, highly amplified heavy metal music to Las Vegas, August 27 & 28 at ROX Club Vegas for a very good cause. Darrin Buchanan the producer and initiator of his version of Rock Against Diabetes explained why he is doing this. “My main objective is a worldwide solution, to help assist people in picking the right foods, how much of them to eat, how to prepare them, and even where to get the proper ingredients. This will be delivered in such a way, that it will be accessible to all people at all times”. He continued “I learned myself that I was diabetic, when I thought was a wounded foot, was actually diabetes related, and serious enough that I will become a below knee amputee on March 13th, 2008. By educating myself, and taking the proper steps, I now have my diabetes and health in control.” The first of the two day event started at 8 PM was considered a Pre-Event Bash. Those performing the first night were, Starving For Gravity that won the right to open during a pre-event competition, Kicking K-8, Karneval featuring Dario Lorino and Magnetico. Saturday, August 28 the main event started at 2 PM. Many of the same bands and musicians started it off. However they were also joined by LA Guns, Y & T, Dog Devine, Leatherwolf, Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal and his All Star Band that included, Les Warner from the Cult on drums, Francesco Di Cosmo from Thin Lizzy on Base, Rafael Moreira who plays in The Rock Star House Band and Constantine Maroulis from American Idol fame. |

Donato doing his hosting duties |
 Donato with Zee Matulonis |
Hosting both events was Evil Dick Donato the extreme personality, controversial winner of Big Brother 8. He was very passionate about his reasons for doing the event. Donato said, this was near and dear to my heart. In my life there have been a lot of people that have been affected by diabetes and it’s started affecting me. My father had diabetes. My best friend who I’ve known since six, his father had it and it was the strangest thing. I got a call from him and all of a sudden his dad lost two or three toes and within the matter of less than a month he died. I saw my friend Mike twice at his dad’s funeral and at my dad’s funeral. It kind of opened my eyes that it is a lot more prevalent that people in society give it credit for”. He continued, “after I got involved with this a very good friend of mine who use to be the DJ for years and his girlfriend Dorothy, I’ve must of known her for a good 15 years and over the years she lost fingers, toes and before I went into the Big Brothers House she lost her leg. She lost her leg below the knee, and they were really excited about it that it was below the knee. It really makes you look at all of the bullshit in your life and stuff you just take it for granted; it kind of put things in perspective that they’re really happy that it was below the knee. After I got out of the Big brother house she was doing the rehab thing and she looked horrible and in a matter of a few months she died. That was after I was involved in this whole thing. I have a good cause to be here and it is personal for me. It’s unbelievable of how many fans have brought to my attention that they have diabetes. Or that they are affected in some way shape or form |
|
 Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal |
told me how and why he got involved, “I spoke to Darrin a few months ago He told me what he was planning on what he was doing and why he was doing. I thought it was something worth getting and putting some time in and getting involved because it’s important” Many people consider Bumblefoot the Albert Lee and James Burton of the younger set his response to the comparison, “As long as they put it in a complimentary way its fine with me, I consider it a compliment”. As far as playing with Gun & Roses he said, “Since2006 we made 27 countries with crowds as big as 150,000 people and started recording tracks for the Chinese Democracy Album. Hopefully some time not too far away people will see and hear that album”. |
|
Music was great however the event seemed to be a bit disorganized. Last year Darrin Buchanan, producer held a very successful event in his hometown of in Abbotsford BC, Canada. He brought the event to Las Vegas in order to take advantage of Live Streaming technology. Buchanan hoped Rock Against Diabetes would become a Global event. I didn’t hear back from Buchana what went wrong but Bill Minarik from Minairk Guitars, one of the event’s sponsors and my connection to Rock Against Diabetes. He told me, “Unfortunately, the company who came up with the idea of the Global Event with Darrin, Deep Rock Drive, who was going to provide the "perfect venue" at their studio as well as the live video streaming, went bankrupt shortly before the event. That is why the change of venue and no live video streaming. Darrin didn't have time to do more than he did after notice from DRD. Unfortunately, that changed the entire dynamic of the Main Event. Had things gone as planned and as DRD had promised, the event would have looked something like in the link below where a Major Rock Group is performing at DRD's Studio in LV. This was a major learning experience for all of us who were involved in promoting this most worthwhile event, and the next time it happens, precautions will be taken to see that everything goes ahead as initially planned”. |
 Bill Minarik |
 Constantine Maroulis |
I finally caught up with Constantine Maroulis the sixth place finalist from American Idol that was to perform at the event as part of Bumblefoot’s All Star Band. He explained how and why he got involved with the event, “Ron Bumblefoot and I worked on this song together a few months ago. We kept in contact he mentioned this s how and anything I can do for charity I’m for it. Not bad with a weekend in Vegas and I get to rock out with a bunch of great musicians for a great cause. Diabetes is still something that people don’t have a great deal awareness about. So anything we can do to raise awareness It a condition that millions of people are still suffering with on different levels. I had an uncle that died due to complications from diabetes and he didn’t really take care of himself. That’s unfortunate because with modern medicine and treatments that are out there for diabetes, people can live a long and healthy life That's why again it is so important for us to keep raising awareness and people come out and support shows like this. You know we are offering great music for a couple of days for a great cause. A second Rock Against Diabetes in Las Vegas s scheduled October 25, 2008 at Darrell Stage. It is hoped that things will go better for them because its is a great way to support a great cause. The event also showed that these heavey metal musicians really have a heart of gold. |

THE TALE OF TWO DOCUMENTARIES |
|
I saw two documentaries in the past two weeks both center on battles. They were Fighting Goliath: Texas Coal Wars and “Who Will Stand” The first film “Fighting Goliath: Texas Coal Wars” co-produced by The Redford Center at the Sundance Preserve and Alpheus Media. It was shown Tuesday, September 9, 2008 at Paris Las Vegas and narrated by Robert Redford. The film follows the Texas Coal Wars by Texas Cities for Clean Air Coalition as they battle to prevent the construction of 19 conventional coal-fired power plants proposed for Eastern and Central Texas. While “Who Will Stand” produced and Directed by a Las Vegas Crew follows the battles of returning veterans from both Middle East and Vietnam wars had its Red Carpet Premiere, Wednesday September 24 at the Brendan’s Theater inside the Palms. | |
 Dave Berns,moderator; |
The Texas Cities for Clean Air Coalition champion was Laura Miller, then Dallas’ Mayor. It was a real struggle for her to convince the smaller Texas cities to join the coalition. These smaller cities were necessary because they were the ones immediately effected by the proposed plants. However most of them were unwilling to join. They were not worried about the pollution problems and even supported them because of the jobs they would bring to the area. But luck was on Miller’s side when many of the residents of those areas discovered plans to bring trains that would infringe on their farms and ranches to transport the coal to the plants. Finally the coalition succeeded in getting the plants reduced from 19 to 3. However those three remaining plants would be the biggest air polluters. So the battles still continues in Texas.. |
|
Besides Las Vegas “Fighting Goliath: Texas Coal Wars were simultaneously shown in Reno and Elko. This film is relevant to be shown in Nevada because of the three proposed power plants to be constructed in Nevada. It is hoped that the film will motivate and instruct people on what can be done if they get together |
 Kate Marshall, |
 Chris Guinchigliani, |
There was a panel discussion following the screening, Dave Burns host for KNPR Nevada moderated the discussion. The panel included Chris Guinchigliani, Clark County Commissioner; Chris Brooks, representative of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 357 and Owner of Bombard Electric; Kate Marshall, Nevada State Treasure and Rose Mc Kinney,-James, Former Nevada Public Utilities Commissioner. |
|
|
|
 Rose Mc Kinney,-James, |
 Chris Brooks, |
|
The discussion varied in content. Marshall centered on the costs. She told that when Nevada Power comes up for review in 2009 that all energies need to be brought to the table it should include the question “What is the best way to provide Nevada with the best efficient energy at the lowest cost and its not coal power plants “. Mc Kinney-James raised the fact that Nevada could lead the way with new alternative energies that will bring new jobs and that perhaps we could export it to help pay for it. Brooks concerns centered on the uncertainty of the tax credit incentive for developing new energy sources. Then Giunchigliani conclusion was perhaps her role in all of this would be to co-ordinate regional, state and local discussion and information, concerts and ways to share resources. |
|
 L-R: Michael Bedik & ), Phil Valentine |
“Who Will Stand” held its Red Carpet Premiere Wednesday, September 24 in Brenden Theatres at the Palms. Those on the Red Carpet included Gerald Gillock – Executive Producer (and Las Vegas attorney), Phil Valentine – Producer- Director (Red Live Productions), Michael Bedik – Director of Photography (Red Live Productions, three other of the film’s producers, Clint Holmes, co-writer and singer of the titled song, his wife, Las Vegas Entertainer, Kelly Clinton-Holmes and more than 60 Wounded Warriors in town for the Soldier Ride. |
|
The film is about the plight of returning veterans from the Iraq, Afghanistan, and Viet Nam Wars. It tells of the battles they fight from physical injuries and mental disorders such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD. Phil Valentine said, “The soldiers told us the best way to tell the story is not to talk to the media, not to talk to politicians, not to talk to actors, not to get anyone’s opinions about the war itself, but only talk to the soldiers, families of soldiers, and the doctors that take care |
 Kelly Clinton-Holmes & Clint Holmes |
 Gerald Gillock |
There are three main elements in the film. The first is the journey into doing the research and getting the soldiers stories. The biggest emphasis of course is soldier’s stories about their experiences. Finally the film tells about three organizations that are helping these soldiers. They are Wounded Warrior Project, which provides aid for severely injured veterans; Canines for Combat Wounded, which provides service dogs to injured veterans; The Soldiers Project, focused on providing free, confidential psychological treatment. Valentine added “We’ve made life long friends doing the film. |

CINEVEGAS 2008 COVERAGE; FUN BUT LIMITED |
Robert Duvall Photo by Zee Matulonis |
Dennis Hopper Photo: Dale Matulonis |
by Zee MatulonisMy Red Carpet experience of covering Cinevegas 2008 Film Festival was the best ever. The special red carpet events we covered during the first weekend were the Opening Night film “The Rockers”, Cinevegas 10th Anniversary party, Dwayne Johnson’s special “Get Smart” screening at Planet Hollywood, as well as his “Star” on Brendan Theaters Walk of Fame. It also included Saturday’s Dark Streets Screening that was followed by “A Concert for Giving” featuring music some of the performers from the movie. Red Carpet coverage also included Honoree Award Ceremony at Planet Hollywood and the Closing Night Vegas Magazine 4th anniversary Party at Palazzo. My husband Dale assigned as ECE’s official photographer was positioned at one end while I as reporter was place down the line with great opportunities in getting interviews with some high profile celebrities. James Caan, Rosario Dawson, Robert Duvall, Angelic Huston and Rainn Wilson were among the celebrities I interviewed. What I found out about myself as the festival aged is that I’ve become dynamite covering these red carpets. Thanks to the public relations staff of Cinevegas I was able to get interviews that I wanted at the festival. Even when it seemed that some passed and I shouted out the right question they would stop, turn around and answer it. Then I was able to ask a couple more follow up questions. As it has been the past four Cinevegas it is nice to be able to chit-chat with Dennis Hopper during various Red Carpets. He always takes the time to come over, say how you doing, and usually talk a bit about what he has seen during the current Cinevegas that he likes. However this year he didn’t get a chance to view many of the films because he was busy filming in Albuquerque, New Mexico the television series “Crash” during most of the festival. It’s great for him to be working but his presence was greatly missed. I did see the special screenings, “The Rocker” and “Get Smart”. The public relations staff of Cinevegas did a great job for the press with the big events. It was the competition films where that same public relations staff fell flat. Film festivals are supposed to be for the inspiring filmmakers that produce low budget independent films. Media and press coverage for these filmmakers are priceless because it helps promote their craft whether or not their films are picked up for distribution or a festival win. In a pre-festival interview, Artistic Director Trevor Groth said something like you need the big events to draw interest into the festival but that Cinevegas does realize that the smaller competition independent films are the real reason for the festival. But I wonder if that was just lip service or if it might have been just growing pains for the festival that limit coverage of the smaller competition films? Our coverage at the beginning was limited to one ticket each day and your request confined 24 hours prior to films show time. You were notified via email if your request was granted. As the festival aged the one ticket rule was rescinded, but not the 24 hour request rule, the email notification ceased and by then many of the films were sold out. So when making a request you risked wasting gas at $4 per gallon and 105 plus heat to find out there was no ticket. There was virtually no press coverage for these films Red Carpets. I also heard mumblings that the quality offerings of these films were down from previous years. Could it be with so many film festivals to choose from many of the better filmmakers are going to other places where they can get better press coverage? Now Cinevegas can be hectic for the public relations’ staff but, they could designate a person to contact to see if your ticket requests were granted. Or, if there was room in the theater you could show you badge and see the film. Even the supposedly sold out shows often had the reserved seat for filmmakers open, during the second screening. That is how I got to see one of the films that were allegedly sold out. There was almost a whole row of empty seats reserved for the filmmakers. So reviews of the films are limited and with a thanks to Laura Velgos who was a volunteer at Cinevegas and got into more films than me. But those reviews are accompanied by Red Carpet comments received by me from actors, directors and producers of those films. My coverage also includes a profile of talented actor Rosario Dawson. She was so gracious and accommodating on the red carpets that I was able to come up with the profile. I’ve completed my coverage with seen and heard bits. In spite of the limited restriction I did enjoy covering Cinevegas 2008. The “griping” is just part of the fun. I also realize that priority should be given to the paying patrons. However a better balance approach to accommodate media needs should be found. Perhaps discussion between media and Cinevegas officials would lead to a more positive experience covering the film festival. |
