Saint Andrew’s Societies were originally formed to assist Scottish immigrants who settled in America, one of the oldest having been formed in 1756. Although named for the patron saint of Scotland, Saint Andrew’s societies are not religious-based groups. They provided financial assistance, housing and job placement to Scots. While our role may have changed slightly over the past 250 years, our desire to share and celebrate our Scottish heritage has not. In 1995, a group of dedicated individuals established the Saint Andrew’s Society of Southern Nevada. Today we have an active membership of 100 individuals and families. Meetings are held on the 2nd Thursday of each month in the social hall of First Christian Church, 101 S. Rancho, and begin at 6:30 pm. Please join us.

Each year our society hosts or co-sponsors numerous events. “Something Scottish” has become a favorite community event and brings Scottish music, dance, history and tradition to life. Our 10th annual event will be held October 3, 2009 at the Rainbow Library Amphitheatre. We are pleased to co-sponsor this event with the Clark County-Las Vegas Library District. Admission is free!

The Saint Andrew’s Society of Southern Nevada also hosts a traditional Burns Night Supper each year. This event celebrates the life and work of Scotland’s National Bard, Robbie Burns. We were so pleased to be part of the world record setting 3600+ Burns Night Suppers held in 2009 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of his birth. Annual celebrations are also planned for National Tartan Day (April 6) and St. Andrew’s Day (November 30).

In addition to our more formal activities, our members enjoy getting together for Pub Crawl nights, concerts, ceilidhs and more. Each meeting honors a clan of the month and our members enjoy the diverse programs presented each month. There is truly something for everyone. We sincerely hope to see you at a meeting or at one of our many events.
